Cliche as it seems, the Dream Arc is very much needed as part of TanTai Jin's character growth. It enabled TanTai Jin to understand other emotions like love, family, jealousy and loss so that he can start growing love threads. Growing up and up till recently, if TanTai Jin was not starving then he was getting beat up or people were telling him how unlovable he is. Love and family were things TanTai Jin had sadly never experienced in real life. After the Dream arc, we see TTJ's love threads start growing and he finally understands the ticklish feeling he gets when thinking of Ye Xi Wu.
Dream Arc also foreshadowed Ye Bing Cheng's true nature which was unleashed when they got back to the real world. She seemed like the sweetest victim before the Dream Arc but after that, BOOM! Plotting, selfishness, poison and betraying her husband.
