yeah well, the most amount of money, with the least amount of effort, from the company's perspective, I guess. So I read some stuff about yaoi, bl, lgbtq media and I stumbled upon some interesting statements. a lot of boys love or yaoi comment, stemmed from japan, at a time, where the me too movement was even more unthinkable than it still is today (in Japan), women get harrassed, with no vices to voice out concerns or what is ok or isn't and nobody willing to listen. some women tried to victimize men (in fiction) for a change, the ball got rolling from there, according to different youtube video's and article's I read but can't recall anymore. a lot of us have been getting harrassed since we were not even mature, now come the culture you live in and work culture, you feel vulnerable, don't know what to do. so you internalize sexual harrasment, assault and the like, but now that the protaganist is not you or a women which you might compete with, it is two hot guys, which makes it easier for you to digest and it makes it easier for you to live with your struggles. those are speculations, fyi.
also let's be real a lot of female character's are shit, they may start strong, but than to give the ml a hero moment, she has to be dumbed down, she is totally unrealistic and not relatable, makes always stupid, irrational decision's based on a first impression and some viewer's might have issue's with inner misogyny.
yuri perhaps isn't as popular, things aimed for guys, tend to be more sexualized, even the porn being made for women seems more emotional than a love story of two girls when aimed at guys, there is a lacking of emotional connection, of course that doesn't involve real love stories or lesbian movies. as far as I know "but I'm a cheerleader" has a big fan group, and Fingersmith and Co. I'm sure though in comparison there is really little and far between and I'm sad for you to have had such an experience as an author.
for the rest, people are contradictory and you will always encounter assholes, wherever you go, just the ratio might differentiate

I'm pretty sure all the promoting and selling might be included in their contracts. Also if an actor has a girlfriend/boyfriend they may be adviced by management to state they are single if they aren't, cause they sell better and bring more money for their company

dramas that are not about the police, do tend to portray their police force as stupid as a brick wall, so some character's can shine or get an redemption arc ^^
