I have been through similar experiences when seeing a drama from another country for the first time. This was my third Taiwanese drama and I still found some things emotionally unpredictable. I went through the same exact thing watching my first Kdramas because I expected them to be like Jdramas or anime.
It was actually funny because by the time I started watching Korean dramas I had already been watching Korean horror films for 2 years! Movies don't prepare you at all!
I am still waiting to see the bonus episode for this. I will probably be rewatching it in a few months when the US catches up and I can stream it through my console without stopping.
