Song Kang is good at projecting warmth and love - he is able to soften and “smile” with his eyes not just his lower face.
Kim Yoo Jung does too!

I think her role is to trigger a crisis of consciousness in FL and cause her to withdraw from the CEO battle- but you’re right, she could have done that as a the FL’s friend.
The actress is super cute and very naturally pretty though!! Gorgeous cast generally.

First show I’ve seen with this actor. Am also watching My Demon BTS and as someone said, he is definitely a goofball - very charming and endearing! Also seems professional and respectful to everyone around him which motivates me to watch more of his work!

Me too - lots of things jumped out on second viewing. Suzy mentioned she had to speak to the director about her own difficult experiences as an idol which came up again when she played Doona.

Ok - just read this article after posting my thoughts above. This is such a great summary! Thank you for sharing :)

He helped her overcome her anxiety and disconnection, and ultimately succeed in her life as an idol. Although he wanted what was best for Doona, the ML felt her success made him redundant, put at risk his own career aspirations, and propelled her out of his “ordinary” world. So, as painful as it was for him, he let her go.
In the end, she had her own friendships and no longer needed him for emotional support. When they crossed paths after the reunion, she was finally able express her feelings and connection to him and insisted he move past his fears about their relationship. My take: they are an unlikely but fated couple - they are together!!! He is in Japan in his “good” but ordinary job and she is launching her album at some Idol convention (I think??). Her album is called UNDER COVER (hint, hint!) - they are seeing each other in secret , out of the public eye because of her fans. Beautiful coming of age journey.

The way the director resolves the relationship story arc is a little unconventional in that you need to watch the introductions for the last few episodes to understand the ending.

If you want a quick guide re what to look for in the intros, keep reading:
- Ep 6 intro show the leads emotional readiness for togetherness. Wanting each other but on opposite sides of the rail crossing (opposite worlds/ life journeys) looking longingly at each other. Trains are a motif in this drama.
-Ep 7 both walking towards each other - especially FL who gazes longingly at ML.
-Ep 8 ML moving forward with his life journey but not towards FL (? I think). Name of this episode and end reflects his frame of mind & fear of being hurt.
-Ep 9 take notice of ML’s expression and the posters promoting Doona’s new album. Lots of good discussion below by others re clues and symbolism in this episodes if you’re interested.
So yeah, the format is a bit arty and subtle with room for interpretation. I really enjoyed it, but other people have found the uncertainty irritating and unsatisfying (which I get too because the story telling is REALLY unconventional) :)

I wondered why Doona had kept in touch with both female roommates (flashback scene in Brazil where she looks through photos) but not ML. Do you think she kept waiting for him to come to her?

Can you make out the writing/ characters on the train station? Some people think they are Japanese..?

Also, interesting detail - in episode 6 you see child Doona ring the manager for the first time to ask to become an idol. The camera flashes to a nearby rail crossing - signifying it’s the start of her life journey. Kinda highlights the train theme :)

In the intros- they finally cross the train tracks separating them to be with each other. They meet in secret (notably in some takes ML is in work clothes from cake shop scene).

Trains are a motiff (I think?) - when he broke up with her, he left on a different train (to travel his life journey for a few years). She kept looking over her shoulder waiting for him to join her on her train (her journey) - but he didn’t.
But in the end - she was the brave one & helped him overcome his fear of being hurt (in the dorm room) and made him see he was wrong (he mirrored her apology to him from earlier). The implication is they made up again.

Thanks Pyrus - I enjoy reading everyone’s comments! Helps me understand different perspectives. All the actors IMO showed skill and craftsman ship when interpreting their character - even the young newbie actors carried themselves so professionally. I also loved the sensitive and warm ML too!
But the way the ML character was written …..unevenly…? I kept expecting that his (supposed) intellectual brilliance would be revealed gradually. We’d see him navigate problems with more skill and nuance! See him piece together all the threads and resolve issues in a clever way. No issue with his emotional vulnerability to FL! That was lovely to watch! Just wish the writer had teased out the character’s growth and SHOWN the viewer rather than told us what an incredible brainiac he is!!

I’m a reader of books and am probably harsh when judging an authors character development (and as you rightly pointed out, I also expect that a characters actions/ skills/ reactions are consistent with what we expect from that person).

OK rant over! :) Won’t stop me watching the series again to enjoy all the symbolism, use of colour & generally gorgeous looking everything !
