Well in fanfic world there is a tag for it ''non-traditional-ABO-verse'' which I have used for my fic for this fandom.
I personally think that she used omegaverse in the novel only for the mpreg. Which makes me question why she kept it in series, when there will be no mpreg. As u said, they could just be humans with supernatural traits but....it's her imagination so not gonna dwell too much hahaha
