Oh, he was smart I bet he knew she had affair from the very beginning since remember the two met in the father's house before she got married.
Overall, it is very likely to happen if u search on emperors and empresses you will find cases where it happened. Also the lie strategy still exists :)

Honestly, I hate love triangles. When I first came to dramaland it was entertaining, but after years it shows me how much the writer lacks in storytelling to use such cheap act such as a love triangle. It means the writer can't offer us a proper drama that would tangle the plot a bit.
I know that a LOT of people think that Chen Yu will cheat on main lead with Qing Yan, but I think that he won't since come on - he knows that Qing Yan is a freaking killer who tried to kill main lead multiple times. I simply think that Qing Yan drugged him and only slept BESIDE him to create a show.... But of course our female lead will have hard time believing Cheng Yu ~
I've also been wondering the same thing @ Mo Ro Fei, but I think I'm going to go with your first thought of her…
The 'rule' about his mother to treat him if he gets injured was broken multiple times tho.... So I think he is playing a real male role bcs come on, when he talked to his mother she never said anything even tho they were both in private room.
