It actually makes sense though: he was even aware of the food. The breakfast was in and out of his mind instantly. He never connected to him while they were trying to eat. But he remembered his attempt at sex. I dont think he connects the food in an intimate way as much as the touch/sex. In his mind, he doesnt realize his partner sees the food as an act of love too.
