I totally agree. When he was dying I couldn't stop looking at the boy's cut finger, I just thought why he didn't put his finger in the other's mouth (this came out weirder than I wanted). The only thing they couldn't do is put the blood in the glass, if I'm not mistaken they said at the beginning, maybe ep 2, that the blood should be drunk fresh, I think they meant directly from the body.
