How minor is Wang Lina’s part in this? I want to give it a chance but the male lead’s personality seems like a total turn off. Is it worth suffering through this drama if I just want to watch it for her?
That’s not surprising to find out Su Ke is an acting professor. Tbh his character captivated me the most whenever he was on screen. His mannerisms and look were just so interesting, it was hard to take my eyes off him. He looked so damn 80s with that hair and those shirts. Plus the way he walked I was like wtf how could someone keep that weird stiff waddle up all the time. Plus his facial expressions and how he talked to various characters, like Chow. The dynamic between him and Wu-ge was so heavy and tense. The acting in this drama, from the whole cast, was absolutely phenomenal.
Absolutely phenomenal. I didn’t realize how desperate for high-quality Chinese tv I was until I watched this.
The production value and acting in this is on par with and any HBO series. It reminded me so much of Deadwood — the opening credits, the immoral but endearing characters and the greed that drives them to put gold above life. The writing was so good. Pieces of this felt absurd at times but I think if you analyze this series, a lot of the absurdity could be interpreted as symbolic. Does the gold represent greed, or ambition? “Why do you pan?” The presentation of femininity in this hyper masculine world and the dichotomy between Lai and Chow is just so good.
This is a serious drama that explores some gritty parts of the human psyche. Absolutely worth the watch if you’re starved for some meaty drama that you can sink your teeth into.
It's been years since I've seen this one but I'll always remember it as one of my favorites. The acting and story were just so top-notch. I didn't get a lot of the puns either, but it was so interesting to see the behind the scenes world of a traditional Japanese art form I knew nothing about.
Please let there be more Zhu Yilong and Jia Ling romance opportunities in the future.
