I completely agree with you. Honestly I was expecting season 2 to be worse than it was, so even this is a pleasant surprise. As you mentioned even cinematography looked better in season 1, which is surprising since season 1 is older and supposedly with a smaller budget? Also , season 1 was more serious, more realistic, made you believe that something like that could really exist out there. In season 2 we have few comic relief characters, and I can’t really think of any in season 1. Also every time after the game would finish in season 1, characters looked traumatised and exhausted, here sometimes they would start smiling and joking with each other seconds after. Not sure how much influence comes from all the people around the original creator of Squid game after such success. That difference in tone is really noticeable. I think if original series was created from the start to have 16 or 20 episodes; where they show main character ‘s fight to put an end to squid game we wouldn’t have any of these complaints, as season 1 really felt like perfect storm, everything was good about it.

Title The Trunk
The stalker was the whole point of the trunk. Without him and that trunk, there’d be nothing for the police…
I disagree, even you mentioned yourself that investigation is a casual side point. It was not needed, even without police scenes; which in many episodes is just two guys staring at the lake, it would work perfectly fine. Even without a stalker and police, their past trauma would still be there, almost everything would be the same. I guess that stalker was added to make it more thrilling, as even now some people complain that it’s too boring … can only imagine without it.
