I was looking forward to watching this. I really enjoyed the novel it's based on, I like Ethan Juan, but this was not good. They took a pretty good web novel about a successful blind chef mentoring and falling in love with someone, and turned it into a melodrama in which yet again the narrative makes having a disability mean your life is useless. Go read the novel. Don't watch the drama.
I may get a lot of hate for this but I wanted to add my thoughts as a non-American. Frankly your comment makes…
Even if you believe wholesale in the idea that the US was the savior of South Korea after World War 2 and the Korean War, and I won't argue with you about that here, the depiction of the FTA negotiations in episode one, were not wholly untrue. The US did pressure SK to make concessions to the trade agreement that were detrimental to their own environmental needs. Was the American character portrayed broadly as a bully? Sure, but this drama is being produced by and for the South Koreans, and just as American media has done, well, always, they highlight and heighten the villainy of the other. That the other, in this scenario, is the American seems to be unsettling many viewers. This is a good thing.
Even if you are offended, or believe it is propaganda, it does reveal how the dominant American presence is being perceived by at least some in South Korea. South Korea has a long history of being mistreated, abused, manipulated, and torn apart; therefore, I think they are entitled to create their own entertainment without worrying about the sensibilities of their so called "saviors."
I’m glad that you gave credit to the brilliance of the Indonesian subber who made watching this drama a transcendently humorous experience. Bravo to that hero.
