As a machine learning developer myslef I don't get your excitement even more so if you say you are from the field…
I'm in ML too, but I'm more on the application side of things - so I frequently talk about the ideation and uses of the technology instead... The developer in me enjoyed this drama too though - I didn't see most of the common misconceptions that are done with tech related dramas - the code they wrote made sense and the randomware attack was handled a lot better than other dramas. The three guys were also so relatable as engineers - using logic to replace analogies haha! It was quite creative!
There have been other people from the industry and field, who also disliked the portrayal, and felt it didn't…
I really like what you've written :) - and this just goes to show that even we can discuss this show even with different things we liked and disliked about the show. Oh and for sure, I totally agree, many people may have different views on how well this drama portrays the industry. Entrepreneurship as a sector is itself so large and vast that most people are bound to have a difference of opinions on how it should be portrayed.
Yes, I do see that all the comments and reviews were just showing the majority sentiment, but I guess I was just surprised at how I liked the drama regardless. I believe I went in with low expectations - thinking I wouldn't enjoy it due to my ship not sailing or the plot dying down - since I had rarely heard any good reviews from people I've talked to (other than the OST of course), and I was amazed by how much I enjoyed watching it. I will disagree with you about Start Up making entrepreneurship look easy - it's shown so many times that its not.
First, I thought the backstory about Dal Mi's dad was highlighting some of these key obstacles (e.g. the lack of security for the family) which caused the family to split apart! Starting your own business is not easy - not in the slightest. Just having a great idea/vision is not enough, start ups need time, money, people, hard work and support. We got to see how even though Dal Mi's dad had a beautiful vision for the future, unfortunately, he wasn't able to be part of making it happen.
Also, the fact that after two years of Do San starting his business as the CEO, he realized didn't know how to bridge the gap between their business's technology and their market until Dal Mi comes along highlights the importance of having the right person for the right job. They emphasized this time and time again - even when the three of them came back rich and famous - they had the passion for working on the technology rather than the business side of things.
These were just two examples, but there are several small things that I think Start Up did portray quite nicely - and realistically - about the industry, which took me by surprise, because I didn't expect this level of detail in the plot.
I can see what you mean by a codependent relationship - one thing that Do San said before the time gap was that they would never disagree - and its unrealistic to expect that the key decisionmakers for a company wouldn't have any disagreements. But he also did say that a long time ago, and like he stated when he came back - he's become stronger. Although still full of hope, he's for sure less naïve about the industry. I would say they still do work well together though - they know each other well and can encourage the other to "follow their dreams" - haha sorry, I had to use the reference. I remember seeing the last scene where they're all dressed up and walking hand in hand and I was just like wow - they've grown to become this amazing power couple!
I mean I still think the grandma would be like HJP's family. Since HJP works with Do San and Dal Mi at the end, I'm assuming the mentor-mentee relationship has turned into them becoming some sort of friends. This might just be me being hopeful though - but if they're seeing each other so much anyways, it doesn't make sense for HJP to distance himself from Dal Mi's grandma - especially when she told him to come see her whenever now (compared to the beginning when she told him to see her only when things got bad)
I had been so scared to watch this, because I heard that the sls broke everyone's heart! But no, I loved this drama so much!! I shouldn't have let other opinions get to me! Don't get me wrong, I loved the second lead to bits, but I thought the main leads were better together (#teamdosan) for one huge reason - you get to see both of them grow TOGETHER!
I also heard comments from people that the drama turns bad around the middle, but as someone in the field, I can't see why people are bashing on it - this drama shows the excitement of business and tech more than ANY other drama I've ever watched! Reignited my passion for ideating, thinking outside the box - a passion for entrepreneurship, giving this drama a special place in my heart.
I loved to see how the main couple grew together - their process and progress and how they are on their way to achieving their dreams together - AHHH SO INSPIRING! I loved the episodes before they got famous, although the story afterwards was fun to watch too.
The second lead - he's adorable and amazing - and like I want to HAVE him, but I think that it was better that he didn't end up with our female lead. He was her mentor and made her cautious, but Do San is the one who ignites her passion. Ji Pyung was the mentor that they could honestly owe their success to, but sooner or later the mentees need to do things themselves - which is what they did. And yes, the story did focus a lot on Ji Pyung's backstory - but WHO SAID THAT YOU CAN'T FOCUS ON ANYONE BUT THE COUPLE? I was and am very attached to him and his story, and I loved that they put that much focus on him, because HE DESERVES IT - regardless of whether or not he gets the girl. I loved how close he was with the grandma <3 even if he didn't get the lead girl, he has a family now :)
**EDIT: I didn't realize I had this much to write - so I wrote my first review instead lol
I don't know how to explain it... but this drama grew on me so much! I started off not really interested in the concept of meeting someone online, and tbh I couldn't see figure out who the male lead was so that made me second guess any pairing I was making... but then I just got so immersed in the story itself! This drama is literally so relatable, I could put myself in the FL's shoes and feel what she was feeling, how she started to trust the ML, and the beautiful journey their relationship takes - a relationship that I just didn't see as possible blossoms into something I can ONLY see them as perfect together! I was a bit scared at first bc I was falling for the wrong ship, but it didn't take me long to see why the main leads were right for each other.. PROPS to the screenwriter though! I have never changed my main ship between one great guy and the best guy for her (this is not late in the show btw) -- and its so well written that you still like both of them - but it blew MY MIND that I could go from not even really knowing or caring about the ML to LOVING him to bits! That storywriting personally helped me feel the female lead's journey of falling in love with the ML too!
ML was like a teddy bear, I wanted to give him such a big hug and protect himm!! I love the couple too so much~~ This drama made me feel soo many emotions gahhh i love it
i just finished ep 3 and this drama is just too much! why does this feel like it was written by-- well idk-- it just feels so cringy.. they're already having a love triangle in the third episode? The 2nd ML falls for her because she matched the description from the employee's card reading for what the love of his life would look like? And I still don't understand why the ML became so protective of her? Like wasn't he trying to kick her out? Didn't he think she was a stalker? I'm having a hard time following along with this drama and everything feels so fake... :(
i f****** love this drama right now!! I've literally been in a drama slump just starting and dropping dramas cuz they're not interesting or they can't maintain my interest but this! OMG! It's one of the best and cutest dramas I've seen all year! Also the leads act incredibly in this and have the BEST chemistry!! FL is soo pretty and the ML has such beautiful eyes btw hehe
the serial killer out here giving SOLID love advice to our FL lmaooooo and im Iike i kinda like you right now you murderer lol (ep 12 - ACCEPT HIS CONFESSION!!)))
same here... the first kiss - the face grab... ummm and like no.
Ahh I actually started watching this drama because of that scene, since I started the drama after I watched a short clip on fb of the "woof" scene and i thought it looked cute, but no... when you see the whole backstory, its hella creepy, like he planned everything, from the one single room, to turning off her phone, and not respecting her boundaries - eekkk.. not okay. That cute scene turned into a creepy scene and I feel a lot of the other "supposed to be sweet" scenes had a similar result
Second ML wasn't any better to be honest especially at the beginning. I think ML was kinda defensive like that…
Ahhhh ok so that's what most likely bothered me about the drama... yeah the drama became more business and family rivalry focused than what I had hoped for

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
