man i wish I knew this when I was watching it - still really enjoyed the drama though but I got really frustrated with Netflix. I kept having to pause every minute to flag the incorrect translations smh

yeah I've flagged a lot of the subs on Netflix, but it looks like its still having a lot of errors. I noticed quite a bit of the Korean translations were off too. But I would highly recommend you continue watching it - either on Netflix or somewhere else!
yeah it’s not really the ending that anyone wanted. but episodes 1-19 are pretty solid
i know, but like for me, the ending makes or breaks a show... I don't know whether I should start this now bc even though I know its a good drama, now that I know that it's not a happy ending for bong hwan, I don't wanna risk getting too attached :'(
the ending sounds like a tragedy... Bong Hwan ends up all alone..? sent back to the present when he had just found his family? oh god i wanted to watch this so bad, but now my heart's breaking... whyyyyyy

I realized this about a week or two after my comment hahaha - it was a real good rewatch in the beginning but towards the end i feel like each episode felt 10 hours long ahhhhh... i wanted to end up finishing my rewatch so i still have it in my watching list but tbh i stopped watching a long time ago

Okay, I see what you mean. Yes, this is not the normal track of companies and they definitely do gloss over some of the steps and concerns in creating a start up. But to clarify, I did not go in with the expectation that this would give me a detailed step-by-step into how to create a business. I went in with the expectation that it would give me a high level overview of the process, and was surprised that they went into detail about some of these steps. I approached this show from the perspective of it being a romantic drama, and was surprised that the plot covered many key points and realistic business problems (even though they might have been a simplification of the problems that businesses face). In other words, I am not even comparing the technical details of this drama with western tv shows - the “realism” I was talking about was in comparison to other asian (typically with a romantic angle) dramas that I have still heard great praise about. Silicon Valley is definitely an amazing show - and I would rave about its technical details while most likely comparing it to other western tv shows.
Maybe we do have a difference of opinion here. The reason why they picked Dal Mi is similar to the reason why they picked HJP as their mentor - even through the other person had better “qualifications,” they knew that Dal Mi and HJP would be the most invested - rather than Dal Mi’s sister who they knew nothing about (if you remember, one of the developers (Do Sam’s friend) tried to call out Dal Mi’s sister for being at Sandbox - they didn’t know that Dal Mi’s sister also had a reason behind entering Sandbox. That’s it made sense to me that they picked someone who they knew was just as desperate as they were to make their business successful. Also, you said that there were 20 other people that got the keywords right, but you have to keep in mind that the developers literally thought they were done and had to pack up after Do Sam didn’t get selected to be a potential CEO. They weren’t planning on hiring another CEO back then, until they got the two offers - one from Dal Mi and another from her sister. Those were the only offers they got, and they picked the one who they felt would understand them best.
Now, when you are saying that Do Sam didn’t give his partners a choice, I sort of disagree with you there. I understood that situation to mean that they had a reason why they picked Dal Mi - which they already agreed on, and that they have no reason to regret their decision just based on comments that other people may have. This is because what Do Sam’s friends were worried about is what others might say about their company because Dal Mi is a dropout - which, although, is a valid concern considering the importance of a good education in today’s society - is not really something that they have to worry about at a place like Sandbox, where they literally don’t look at those credentials and qualifications.
I was worried about the relationship between the two of them too, since it is kind of tricky to go into a business with a significant other. But still, I really wouldn’t have it any other way. Do Sam and Dal Mi both value their team more than anything, which is why - although it was hard for them when Dal Mi found out the truth - she still came into work and tried to give her best (although she was missing some motivation). You might label them as a codependent relationship, but I think that if they are able to find encouragement and motivation from each other, then sticking together is a good thing. But you are right that realistically, it is probably better not to go into business with a romantic interest.
When you mention that she wasted tuition, I didn’t quite interpret it the same way. I’m pretty sure that if you drop out early on - you can get your tuition refunded. The reason she dropped out though is probably because she realized that her grandma won’t be able to handle their living expenses without a shop, and decided to help out her grandma instead. If anything, I’m pretty sure that this happens a lot irl also.
I don’t know when Dal Mi’s sister became a feminist but I don’t think her reason had anything to do with independence from men. Also, we may have different opinions on this as well, but I do think that she created her business to stick it to her father (which honestly is totally fine - I don’t think that it is a petty reason at all - if it motivates her, then it works for her). If you remember the self-driving car test - she decided to place a bid to show off to her father. And this is still okay, because she and Dal Mi considered all the other factors before actually doing this.
On the other hand, I don’t think Dal Mi’s reason was to stick it to her sister. I think seeing her sister definitely sparked some ambition in her which wasn’t there before, but isn’t that a good thing? If she only created a business to stick it to her sister, I don’t think she would have been able to work for her sister later on in the story. Even if her sister was her trigger in her desire to become successful, I still think it makes sense… Dal Mi wanting to prove that she doesn’t regret her decision to stay with her dad when her sister said that it was good that she didn’t stay with her dad is something which I felt was quite reasonable.
I’m pretty sure they showed the bromance throughout. Like, to me they never felt like mortal enemies. On the other hand, it felt like the type where they wanted to hate each other but they couldn’t because they knew how genuine the other guy really was. It felt more like a love-hate bond to me - which is why I felt that after some time, when HJP would feel more comfortable around the couple, I could actually see the two of them becoming good friends.
I’d love to be that girl for HJP and help him break out of that shell ;) I mean… if the FL won’t have him, I will! hahhahahaha

I am not exactly sure what you mean when you're saying that they never touched on the actual hardships of business. They for sure did! They described so many key points of making a business, including and showing us a bit of some of these phases such as the brainstorming & ideating, making a business plan (aka monetizing the business with identifying market and potential sources of revenue), bringing in investors & business changes and conflicts that take place due to shares of the company and more... They encountered so many realistic problems along the way, that adding more conflicts to the mix might just take away from screentime given to character development and their team bond).
Another thing -- there's a reason they didn't pick Dal Mi's sister. She asked them to join her (which you might just say is a simple game of choosing the right words), but this is shown in her team dynamic as well. She's the majority shareholder in her company - with her having all the power to make decisions for the company. What Do San and his team didn't want is this sort of hierarchy in the company. Although they later realize this is naive when creating their business plan, if you remember their first plan, all of the members of the team had a rather even split in their shares. When Dal Mi asked them if they would recruit her - you might just think its a simple choice of words or an emotional choice, but I think their personalities were definitely a better match. At that point Dal Mi's sister was just using her business as a means to get revenge on her step father, and she wouldn't care as much about the developers' opinions as we can see Dal Mi did. And what you said about Steve Jobs being a genius - well Dal Mi was also a drop out from a prestigious university (if you remember the grandma was telling this to Dal Mi's mother) - and Dal Mi has clearly shown her talent when she was picked in the name the keywords round. I do think that their choice makes sense to me.
I don't think anyone could say that she entrapped Do Sam after her presentation. It was clear as day that she was better at communicating the business idea than Do Sam ever was.
I like your recommendation though, I've been wanting to watch Silicon Valley for a while now - but got distracted by dramas haha. I don't think comparing Silicon Valley to Start Up is really fair though, since we aren't going into the two shows with the same expectations. Silicon Valley is 6 seasons long while this is only 16 episodes and a romantic drama.
I don't know if you remember this part of the ending, but when Dal Mi and Do Sam are walking side by side, Dal Mi's sister and HJP join them. And although HJP and Do Sam are "rivals" in love, the bromance can be seen between the two of them as well. For example, when HJP wakes up at Do Sam's house, Do Sam asks his mom for a dish that HJP will like. On the other hand, HJP isn't opposed to the idea of working with them to invest in their company at the end - in fact, he just thought that Do Sam wouldn't want him to work with them. This was proof enough to me that after some time, I can see these two boys being friends (I liked their moments together lol).
I get what you're saying about the HJP's situation when you put this into real life about coming to see the grandma after you're rejected by the granddaughter, but its true that HJP doesn't have anyone else. I can't imagine him blocking out the grandma at the end and yet seeming so happy in the ending scene.
