I just binge-watched it, and I think that the ML's speculation is correct; there never was time travel to begin with. JX's grandma told QL that before JX disappeared, she gave her 100,000 yuan! I guess she got the money for her participation in that lab's experiment on neuroscience. and the year that she disappeared is the time when they altered her memories, so she is just the original JX with altered memories. ql has maybe gone through the same experiment, hence why he has that phone with the locator. The lighthouse system gives purpose to people, right? QL's purpose is to find his friend, who does not even exist. JX's purpose is to hustle until she is able to return to her world. Her "ex" has also gone through this experiment; that's why he disappeared at the same time JX did.
