I don't think so. I think she was making amends. At first she didn't really know how to face him so that's why she appeared rude toward him and distant. And yes, she screwed up for how many every years, but that was her way of making amends plus that scarf that she knitted all those years back. The only issue I have is with the end of that note of don't blame mom. He has every right to blame her whether he does or not. His expectations of her were a failure and she regrets it. We can dislike her, but how he feels as a totally different story.
