This is my interpretation of the Dowager.
She was a 1st rank concubine so she likely went through selection and lost out to the queen. It’s standard AND understandable why she would want her son to usurp the crown prince back then. That is the only way she would become queen dowager and her son would be safe. What she did is what ALL concubines aspire for: their “bastard” sons to become King.
There’s no guarantee the Crown Princes condition can be cured since it’s hereditary. That was made clear by the royal physician, which is why they are still looking for treatments. She never liked the Queen because she was selected by the previous King over her own blood (Consort Hwang) and it seems like the Queen has never been on good terms with her. She only has power for as long as her son, the current King, is alive.
I think she’s abandoning the crown prince for power, if she places a concubines son as Crown Prince and eventually King, then she can maintain her power. As for the a$$hole comment, she doesn’t know (& probably doesn’t care) that prince uiseong is being disrespectful to the Queen. She also hasn’t chosen him. She is pitting ALL of the concubines and the grand princes against each other. As long as one of them rises to be Crown Prince, she’s happy. Seems like she’s doesn’t care who as long as it’s not one of the Queen’s sons.

However, are we really sure she likes Tae-i enough to cry over him.. esp a few days after their first date? That seems extreme. I think it’s more likely that she’d cry over HeeDoo getting closer to JY. We know that HD/JY are already going on a second date which is the fastest turnaround for a 2nd date so far. And with the fact Nayeon has only cried in relation to HD, it’s most likely connected to him.
I just don’t see her crying over Tae-i, almost 3(?) days after their date. Him going on a date with Jisoo wouldn’t rattle her that much. Like we agree, she’s smart and likely has figured out all of the couples. She’s probably also figured out that the other girl GM went on a date with was JS and guessed that whenever GM wasn’t texting her, he was texting Jisoo (hence her laughing when HE lied).
