According to the director Yin Tao, Deng Wei was always the only choice for Su Yi Shui. He stated, "When we were creating the character Su Yi Shui, we had Deng Wei in mind from the start. His cold-on-the-outside, warm-on-the-inside personality is a perfect match. When we first met Weizi (Deng Wei‘s nickname), he had already read the novel and had a deep understanding of Su Yi Shui, so we immediately decided he was the one."
