I think it's down to audience interpretation. I understood it as JL taking LWY out of the past (50 years ago) and going to the newly adjusted present day. Because 50 years ago JL changed history by killing the fox queen/JY and didn't allow for the oracle stone to be implanted in LWY, which means the new world in present day if what life would be like as JY never existed & caused havoc.
The only reason I feel that JL & LWY haven't gone to an alternative universe is because in the new present day, Li Jie has that thought where he could hear the voice of JL saying "Come find me" which implies that JL is in his timeline, despite not knowing who he is.
I feel like I might be the only person thinking this... If anyone else is old enough to have watched & remember the HK drama series from the 90's/early 00's "My Date with a Vampire" - did you spot certain similarities in the last few eps of this show??
