Tbh, it's not really difficult as you thought. It's really straight forward and no conjugations needed like other languages.
I am taking mandarin classes in my university because it has more format and I can't bring myself to study on my own. I'm too lazy for it- I have Japanese, korean, and spanish books and CDs sitting here waiting to be studied. After graduating, I can also receive a certification for it.
In learning, it all really matters with your determination if you really want to learn or what makes you really wanna learn it. I started learning mandarin with the reason to understand and watch cdramas/Taiwanese dramas without subs. Then after going to China for a two-week study program, I started to challenge myself to really apply the language in real situations. Hence, learning mandarin can be used in future like careers.
Note: you don't really need to write chinese characters. Just recognise them and its meaning, and youre good to go. You can type them in pinyin(Latin alphabet) using Chinese keyboard.
