Exciting turns to boring but beautiful

Well this was an interesting experience. This short drama was beautifully crafted, acted and produced. It was a pleasurable watch.

The story revolves around two antagonists: Nie Zhe the son of the most powerful man in the county and Xiaodie, a maid. When her mistress dies after being assaulted, Xiaodie decides to avenge her death. She takes her place and introduces herself into Nie Zhe's house. Immediately the sparks fly and they clash until they do not anymore. That is the moment that Die's mistress chooses to reappear after being brainwashed by the neighbouring county's spy.

The drama has an amazing first third: enemies to lovers trope is my favourite. Watching the main couple spar, bicker and fall in love, chemistry lighting up the scene like fireworks, was perfect. Smart female lead and tsundere male lead were just a joy to watch. And there were some hot scenes, let me tell you! Barechested Nie Zhe is worth the watch. I am shallow, sue me! LOL

Until they became a boring couple in love. Love in dramas really means death to brain cells. So they are in love and keep wanting to die for each other when facing the bad guys! But, fortunately, heavens protect people in love from their own stupidity, it seems here!

The rest of the drama is quite boring frankly! Being held hostage, poisoned, threatened, held at gunpoint, faked death etc. etc. you think of it, they did it! Spies, crazy doctors and revenge of revenge of revenge or whatever was boring and annoying.

The actors did a wonderful job, they were perfect for these roles. The cinematography was stunning and the sequences filming details (flying pen, sloshing drink, breaking glass, falling petals...) were a feast for eyes! And songs were amazing: they gave the drama this century ago feeling,

It could have been a perfect drama had not the second part got lost in the ridiculous spy story. Bi=ut it is still worth the watch: if only for the main leads. They were extraordinary!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

It has been a long time since I binged a good thai BL. And I loved this one. The main couple was on fire, their chemistry was so good. So much so, I might even go back and finish To Sir, With Love which I dropped....

But I have an issue with costume designer. More about that later!

The story is rather superficial: a cynical lawyer wants to get revenge for being fired from a case so he takes the former opponents as clients and in the course of investigation they fall for each other. Not a new or revolutionary plot: a classical enemies to lovers story. And I love those so this turned out to be such a binge fest!

The actors were great: Film is an amazing actor. He showed us all the ambiguity of Charn's character and motivations. I might check out his other series! Jam is Tin, the usual macho man, straightforward and honest to a fault.

Did anyone watch this for the plot? I do not think so! We all watched for the romance and the plot was secondary: it was important as a driving force behind the characters, bringing them together. But those characters were what mattered and they were a varied and intriguing lot. There was the second couple: the big baddie's son, yearning for his crazy abusive father's love and his bodyguard. Ambiguous at the start of the series, they proved to be a couple of unlucky boys trying to survive the bully of the father/boss/criminal mastermind(korean makjang evil chaebol like)! And an assorted lot of his henchmen with baseball bats beating everyone up. On the good side, there was the grandmother: kind, smart, strong and open minded; and of course the club owner and her girlfriend, the singer: wise and loving and helpful! And last but not least, Charn's the mad as a hatter ex boyfriend and local thug rich boy, Naween. A delight to watch., for real!

So that was a really fun watch until the last half an hour when they delved into the weak gay rights in Thailand, and hopes for the better world, and diversity, and inclusion and all that jazz. Now days, they seem to end every bl like that including a wedding! Fine! Just fluff mixed with gay rights movement! Well, why not?

I know that I am going to be slapped on the fingers by the community, but am I allowed to have a slight disagreement with you about the fashion?

The non business clothes they put on Film: frilly blouses and wide floppy trousers and a tuxedo looking more like a wedding dress than a suit - why? Why did not they put the same kind of clothing on Jam? So people here say that Film's character wears that because he is in accord with his sexuality and being gay he shows his softer side like that. Could not the same thing be said about Jam's character? Tin is open about his sexuality and does not hide it. But unlike Charm he does not feel the need to advertise it???? I had the same problem with Bed Friend where James wore the same kind of clothing. And his macho boyfriend was always dresses in black. Yes, the BLs have evolved from classical seme/uke stereotypes but still it is very much obvious by the way the characters speak, move and dress who is who in these relationships. Both James and Film are beautiful in their respective series. Beautiful not handsome.

But, that's only my opinion...

Japanese BL version of Something In The Rain

The fluffiest part of this drama were opening credits. The rest is a slow burn, angst filled, heavy with secrets and untold truths and I loved it. Moreover it reminded me of my favourite K-drama, SITR with the stress put upon family ties, friends to lovers theme and workplace sexual harassment. Since it is a japanese drama, it is shorter, more succinct and the family is just touched upon but it is just as bad.

Tokyo in April Is... tells the story of Kazuma and Ren, best friends when they were in school but separated due to an incident. They meet again accidentally ten years later and the spark that connected them years earlies is still there. But something is holding Ren back, he does not want to confide in Kazuma so they become sex friends. And then slowly more.

The main theme of the drama is acceptance: how to accept and define yourself, how does the family see you and whether they accept you regardless.

The main leads were excellent, they had good chemistry, were very much at ease with each other and were deceptively obvious. At the start of the drama, Kazuma looked like a shy, sweet and innocent boy while Ren seemed like a much stronger characters, he was outspoken and nonchalant. But very soon it turned out that Kazume, behind his sweet exterieur, hides a core of steel while Ren hides his wounds and his fragility. I liked this non conformity. They met when they were teens and struck a firm friendship which developed into love neither was really conscious of, especially Kazuma. Ren quickly figured out he was gay himself but Kazuma always refused to put the term to the feelings he had for Ren. And he stuck to this notion to the very ending, refusing to define himself as gay but saying he "only loves Ren". This gay-for-you-only trope is really getting old and unnecessary. It was very much obvious from the beginning that both boys have strong feelings for each other.
At this point, I would like to congratulate casting director on casting two young actors who played Ren ans Kazuma at 15(in flashbacks): they were perfect, there was a definite resemblance with the main actors and they portrayed those young man with talent and sensitivity.
The romance between them is an adult one, they are not afraid of physical contact. What scares them both is communication: so they sleep together regularly, practically live together but do not talk about important things. That leads to a lot of misunderstanding and missed chances. And almost to another unwilling separation because of "it's for your own good" classical plot point. The main events, the ones that shaped them and caused them a lot of suffering happen in the rain under transparent umbrellas. (Is there any special meaning to it? Not an umbrella expert, here!lol)

The boys' families are something special. After the first incident, Ren's family disowns him to the point of having him change his surname. Ultimate cruelty of unloving parents. Kazume is a child of divorced parents and his mother seems to be just as bad if not worse than Ren's parents. But her reactions are explained by her being worried about them (since she quickly understood that those two have extremely strong connection!) which was not really clear to begin with.

Personally, I really liked this drama, it is my kind of drama!I wanted to rate it higher but then they went and ruined it with two of my most hated tropes. Still, if you make abstraction of those, the drama is an excellent short watch. Great story, lovely cinematography, excellent acting, natural, subtle skinship; and cuteness overload in credits where they show off their domestic bliss!

When I think I almost did not watch this believing all those posts saying that the second half was bad etc. True, it was not as good but it was far from ruining a great drama (which went, for me from 9.5/10 to 8.5/10 so still an excellent drama!)

BL version of a Korean romcom drama

The year 2023 is the season of office bls. Last year we had an abundance of sports and mafia series and the year before, 2021, cooking was most prominent theme while 2020 was the school centered bl year. Step By Step is one of the better office romcoms if not the best.

So there are two versions released: the uncut version has episodes 20 to 50 min longer than the 45 min/ep TV version. Usually when we talk about uncut version of a BL, viewers think that the steamy scenes had been cut. Considering that there are the grand total of two hot scenes in all of the uncut version of the series, I do not think it is the case. Probably just plenty of regular scenes though I do not understand what they managed to cut since there is not one single unnecessary scene . The flow of the story is steady without idle time and in spite of it being a slow burn romance and full of usual tropes, I was not bored for a minute.

Story is a rather simple office romance about Pat and Jeng. Pat is the youngest member of the marketing team and is regularly asked to do chores for his coworkers. One day while carrying coffee cups, he bumps into Jeng and the connection is immediate. They accidentally meet like that a few more times and it seems like they really like each other. Until it turns out that Jeng is Pat's new boss and the developing feelings need to be put on a back burner because Jeng as a boss is a completely different person, so much so that Pat is scared of him and gets to be very insecure and emotional. Jeng on the other hand proves to be rigid, controlling, micromanaging and inflexible.

The love story develops slowly over 10 episodes, step by step while they are learning about each other and changing and mostly because of the boss/employee relationship which makes any other kind of relationship a very risky business. When they eventually get together, the whole hell breaks loose and they split only to get back together two years later (trope).

There are a few side stories involving Pat's ex, who wants to try again, of course (trope), Jeng's father doing everything to discredit Pat (trope), a straight couple getting pregnant (trope), a long term gay couple (fem gay trope), and Jaab, Jeng's rebellious younger brother having a crush on a taken coworker (trope).

Main couple is comprised of a tsundere Jeng and doormat Pat. And while Jeng is perfection, I never managed to understand what could have possibly attracted him in Pat. He is short, too emotional, ugly, weak of character (can't say NO to anyone), too sensitive, not particularly smart and very unlikable (this last is due to the poor choice of actor: he is so wrong for this role!). I watched this Man, who played Jeng wonderfully well. I believed him to be in love even though the chemistry with Ben (who played Pat) was minimal almost non existent. Man literally carried the whole drama all by himself, he's the one who made the drama worth watching to the end! Ben cannot act nor is he cute, casting director made a huge mistake there!

The writing was on the spot because they managed to show us over time (the first 11 episodes take place over about a year) the slow , step by step progression of their relationship, how they get to know each other better and go beyond boss/employee relationship fully understanding the problems that that may cause (which of course happened!). I was also surprised by an almost total absence of misunderstandings: they regularly talked when problems arose and when they didn't, it caused major rifts between them. So the writers learned the lesson of communication being important and managed to find other issues to create drama about.

Another actor who actually stole the show is Saint who plays Jaab, Jeng's younger brother who decided to stay away from his rich family and their big corporation. Jeng is a heir to the company but when he needed to choose, he chose happiness. Jaab is the same: pursuing happiness. Though his relationship with Jane is not resolved, they keep dancing around each other for a long time with Jaab trying not to cross the line since Jane was dating someone already. Their relationship also grows slowly, step by step through misunderstandings and lack of courage.

A special shout out to the costume designer. The clothes were nicely color coded for characters and all were in light dull colours: Pat was always wearing oversized shirts in stripy and beige while Jeng was in slim mustard coloured suits at work or jeans at home! The rest of the characters were similarly dresses: Put, Pat's ex was always in black etc.

Few miscellaneous notes:
- supportive friends you can call any time: they were fun to watch!
- why are drunk people considered cute? Because they tend to talk without a filter so you get to find out their secrets?
- at a usual mid-series beach escape(trope), a room was missing in a hotel so Jeng asks Pat to share his room not his own brother? Smooth!
- this is the second series (after La Pluie) where an adult has a meltdown because the parents divorced though here it was solved in an evening by talking about it.
- the most horrible scene that i have ever seen in an asian drama: a woman was giving birth on a bus and the other passengers were filming her while the Police was standing on the side and only the threat of a lawsuit had them lower their phones. These smartphones have created monsters out of all of us!
- we never really got the answer to Jeng's mysterious departure from the company two years before the beginning of the series
- and of course a totally unnecessary two years later time jump: they could have sorted everything out two months later or even better two days later when everyone has cooled off.

This is not so much a BL as it is a regular romcom. It is on the same level as the ordinary korean rom coms: cute couple, hot ML, great group of friends, awful ex who tries to butt in,a horrible rich parent, understanding middle class parents, supportive fem gay friend (no screaming trans characters, yey!!!!), final fight and a time jump until the honeymoon happy ending.

I want to see Man in something else. Stat!

Magic, martial arts and secrets

And on to another short c drama gem! And this one was fun to watch: a complex plot, excellent writing and acting, boring already heard kind of music and a cliffhanger!

It is a complicated story of palace conspiracies and hidden identities. The soul of a murdered girl enters into the body of a general's daughter slated to marry the fifth price considered silly and idiotic. But she finds him sweet and kind and naive and falls for him hook line and sinker without realizing he is a master martial arts warrior. When she discovers the truth she is mad and angry. The end.

The acting was superb. The ML was excellent going from silly to hearthrob in a blink of an eye, changing character so smoothly that the fact she could not recognize him was rather believable: that different attitude and the white hair were a perfect deception combo. She hides a secret as well: that she actually is not the general's daughter. She is a strong brave woman, competent warrior and an expert pharmacist (or poison enthusiast!). Only one person finds her change of character intriguing. It goes to show how a woman is practically invisible and brought up only to serve men and disappear behind them. When she shows that she actually does have a brain, the men are scared and intrigued.

The best and most entertaining episode was ep 10 when they had to deal with a plague hitting the kingdom. It was thinly, very thinly, veiled exposé on COVID in China and it was hilarious (from my point of view!) though that funny part had nothing to do with the drama just a personal appreciation!!!!

The only problem I had with this drama was the ending. So she finds out he has a secret identity and is all huffing and puffing angrily and jumping in the water and disappearing etc. But she also is not who she claims to be so what gives her the right to feel hurt and offended and angry?

The drama is chock full of plot so there is not a moment wasted on the unnecessary side plots: we have martial arts, flying fans, poisons, music, ghostly possession, zombies, magic and crazy good chemistry!

So on to the sequel!

Sherlock & Sherlock

Don't Call It Mystery is a japanese drama heavily borrowing from Sherlock Holmes modus operandi.

Konou Totono is a quiet, loner of a student whose goal in life is to make curry and survive the day. He goes to university and is apparently without family and some of his memories re missing which does not seem to bother him too much. His remarkable feature is unruly curly hair making him easily recognizable. Another quality of his is an extraordinary attention to detail which surprises everyone around him especially when he explains how the events unfolded with his dead pan delivery making is to obvious in hindsight. Therefore he is just like Sherlock.

In the first episode he is arrested for murder and while sitting in the police interrogation room and talking to detectives, he solves the case for them and happily goes home to make his curry!

This special 2h episode (not 2h25 as indicated on the MDL page!) takes place between the first and the second episode of the series. It reprises the first episodes with a few additional scenes introducing a new character important for the second part of the special in which Totono and this new character, embark upon a strange part time job looking for a buried time capsule.

The extraordinary and a bit disturbing new character, a classmate called Sagara Ren takes Totono along on an adventure. Ren's apparently happy go lucky disposition actually hides capacities similar to those of Totono.

The music is a bit strange for a mystery show: highly recognizable classical music punctuates and stresses the events on the screen with only one song in japanese during ending credits. The cinematography is, just like the rest of the series, saturated in cold colours: grays and blues are prevalent but since it takes place in winter it is appropriate. Goes as well quite well with the character of Totono.

I do not know if this additional character will show up in the movie: but seeing how he just breezed through, like a genie I would be surprised. I actually half expected this special to turn ito fantasy when I saw the important place Ren took: he was always dressed in white and sporting a huge smile (poor actor must have had cramps after filming this!).

This is definitely a good watch: and it can be watched without problems by those who have not seen the drama.

Someone said obsession?...Ready to watch!

Recently I keep coming upon series where the main theme is obsessive love. Well, this one is in a class of its own!

Double Mints is a story of two men with a same name who cannot live apart no matter how bad they are to each other. We know nothing about the two characters: what is known is their relationship: toxic, codependent, raw, addicted, obsessive, damaged.

They met in high school where one becomes the owner of the other one calling him "the dog". Every time "the dog" tries to break free, he is pulled back into the weird relationship. So much so that "the dog", even adult, has no will of his own before his master. But when he realizes that his master is someone else's dog (in this case, he has become an errand boy for the local yakuzas), he starts to change. They are still addicted to each other but the erstwhile dog decides to become equal. And they understand that they are the two halves of the same . Soulmates sounds too fluffy for this damaged relationship. But that is what they ultimately turn out to be! Unhealthy it may be but they need to stay together.

What is it about these toxic , obsessive relationships that is so fascinating?

The movie is dark. The cinematography is appropriately black and bleak. The acting is perfect: the actors managed to portray complex feelings through posture, voice and facial micro expressions. The cello music is ominous and rather scary not allowing for a glimmer of hope in this world filled with cruelty. The editing is a bit messy: the timeline seems stunted and it is difficult to understand how much time has passed between the scenes.

It is a hard watch, long and draggy at moments with minimal dialogue. They did not need to say anything, everything was crystal clear from the way they walked and behaved.

Domestic martial arts bliss

So in order not to upset chinese censors (who must be blind and deaf after not seeing or hearing much in the"bromance"; because, frankly speaking, the drama was hot and steamy in the round about way!) they give us this 11min whatever!

I was expecting a normal length episode and what I get was two songs recapping the series and a scene showing us that our heroes have become immortal and are going to live happily ever after in seclusion on top of the mountain practicing martial arts and loving each other! Eeeerk! This additional scene moreover, contradicts in everything last 10 min of the drama and the fan guy's monologue explaining he was going to become powerless if not dead.

They were pretty to look at, dancing around each other in the glittering snow and with sparkling sun above them wrapping them in a halo of immortality! They had gone through so many trials and have earned their place in the land of happily ever after!

Never mind! The fans needed to see them being happy together so to hell with continuity just give them what they ask for!

First love, regrets and flowers

Beautiful. Poetic. Sweet. Magical.

There exist a flower shop which you can enter only if invited. Mizushima Toru gets one invitation and curious, goes there. The owner, Mochizuki Hayato asks him to choose one flower out of three and then gives him one petal. Toru suddenly finds himself 10 years earlier on his high school graduation day when he spoke for the last time to his first love Shindo Kasumi. Can the past be changed or will only regrets remain? Using remaining petals, Toru goes back again and again trying to gather courage and confess his love. Will he be successful?

This amazing web drama needs sequel. Like yesterday!

It is beautifully filmed, the actors are perfect: the cool florist, the flustered Toru and the kind Kasumi. Music is rather generic

The main theme is the first love and how it is never realized and how it remains in memory shrouded in regrets and how we can never go back and fix it, and how we need to have more courage and be brave and take risks. The story is perfect from the first to the last minute (35min in all) and the final surprise.

Cinematography is excellent: the 4:3 screen ratio is surprising since nobody uses it anymore. Unless it is destined to be shown on IG or similarly square formated site , it is wrong format for a vertical tiktok drama. Nevertheless, it harks back to the old 20th century television! The colours are bold, joyful in the present and dull yellowish brown for the memories.

They managed to say so much in this short series. Go watch it!

Twenty forever?

Actually, I was not going to write a review for this drama but then I noticed that there weren't any so I might as well jott down a few of my impressions. I just love this kind of fantasy and this one has an novel way to work with time!

It is a story of a young woman who, on the eve of becoming twenty, categorically refuses to buy a packet of chewing gum from a bizarre looking woman. Little does she know that that woman is a witch who goes on to curse her, as a repercussion, to remain 20 forever. So on every New Year, the girl's life gets reset and everything she'd done gets deleted: her family and friends do not know her anymore. Everything starts to change when , twenty years later, she meets her first love's doppelganger, creates solid connections with old and new friends and finally finds the witch again.

As you can see, I loved the story. The writing was good and I found it rather convincing since the initial set up was very complicated (time passes for everyone except for her) . She becomes a forty year old woman inside a twenty year old body but still references things from the first time that she was 20 leaving people around her flabbergasted! The drama is funny and sweet. The actors were OK, nothing to write home about, they emoted enough but acting was obviously not their cup of tea. They were easy on the eye so the lack of acting chops are to be overseen since the story is fun to watch even without fireworks. Actually, the FL had better chemistry with the SML, as usual but the ML was cute as a brooding button! One of the most interesting characters was the witch: over the top scary make up who eventually gets sick with Alzheimer's but manages to find a few sane moments to sort the FL out.I did not like the witch very much because of the way they presented her: such a cliché when they could have done something more subtle and therefore scarier!

All in all, they managed to keep the second hand embarrassment to a strict minimum: though it was a bit difficult to believe that the FL was not at ease with all the internet speak: it sometimes seemed she was stuck in time, as if she did not follow the societal evolutions over those twenty years of being 20!

Koreans are definitely very creative when they deal with time problems: be it time slip, time travel, time curse, groundhog day! I am just so happy to have discovered K-dramas because they do not seem to be afraid of any complicated subject and time is very very complicated.

Cherry on top...

I am one of those rare people who actually liked the series a lot: it was consensual and sweet with minimal angst and no toxicity. Well, I call it "MAME antidote".

The producers offered us this additional episode, taking place one year after the last episode of the series.

Nhai is still being his childlike self but Ai has become distant which scares Nhai. So with the help of Ton, he follows Nhai to his father's resort to sort things out.

This is just a piece of fluff but what a very pretty fluff it is! The scenery is pretty, Ai is pretty & serious, Nhai is pretty & cute as a button,

Anything negative to say about this? Well let me think....it is extremely sweet and the music is bad, generic and unremarkable!

For die hard fans only!

Missed opportunities and regrets

The synopsis is a bit misleading as in that this is not actually a diary just two people sitting together on a train and reminiscing.
It is quite a simple story: a boy meets a girl and is smitten but also is very clumsy and indecisive and cannot bring himself to confess his love to her. When he finally decides to do it, he is beaten by his best friend! The whole world crumbles around him and they all part ways. Ten years later, the boy is now a documentary director and going through a slump when he accidentally meets the girl on the metro. And they talk about the past.
This drama special tells the importance of good timing, of being brave, of having the courage to face challenges even if it will lead to defeat, not to be afraid of taking the bull by the horns unless you want to live with the regrets of the missed opportunities.
We all have moments in life that are similar, when we are afraid to say or do something because the outcome is unknown. "I could have, I should have..." we all say that, and so does the boy in this drama special.
The girl is rather cryptic, we do not know how she feels, she is always nice and smiling but does not let anyone close. She is aware of boy's feelings but does nothing to encourage or dissuade him either way. I guess that's why he is reluctant to say anything.
Meeting each other 10 years later, they realize they do not remember things the same way and also it makes her realize the error of her ways back then. Is it too late? The answer is unknown, the ending is open!
I must confess I watched this because I just finished watching The Forbidden Marriage and I am suffering from Kim Young Dae addiction. Here he is playing the best friend, serious and committed to his studies who never lets anyone know he has a crush on the girl.
The cast is all good, the writing is solid, the music is sweet. All in all one hour well spent!

They took the time needed!

I must confess that I have no memory of Boum and Prem from UWMA. Those I still remember, vividly, because they left an indelible impression are Kao and Earth(they DID steal the show!). So when I kept coming upon WinTeam raves I had no idea what they were about! Then the short series came out with their daily life and it was cute and funny and sweet! So I went into this series based on those short sketches not UWMA and I loved it.

It is a slow burn romance starting with a one night stand turning into friends with benefits becoming lovers. I loved the pace, the time they took to introduce properly characters, the time they took to develop properly the relationship. I loved that they both behaved and reasoned as adults asking and giving consent. This is such a huge step forward: there are more and more thai bls where even students are behaving as adults who ask for permission, for consent.
The series dealt with a numerous issues: survivors guilt, family pressure, public image and they took the necessary time to develop each issue. It was eventually perfectly clear that complicated life issues are not solved by falling in love(as is often the case in dramas!) but by talking about it, having patience and taking time!
In spite of the slow development and the time they took, it was really well done, it was the right way to do it. There are no shortcuts in life!
I liked the idea of the hemp rope which is stronger than the red string therefore people connected by this rope have a more solid relationship!
And, last but not least, they know how to swim correctly! Very often there is a character is thai bls who is supposed to be an athlete, a swimmer but when you see them paddling through the pool, it is obvious they can barely keep their heads above the water! For the first time in my thai bl watching, there are actual swimmers, it looks like these actors can swim correctly!
Cinematography was gorgeous: beautiful beaches, pool scenes, rain.... Music as well.

Now on to what was wrong.
Not much but still important: lack of chemistry across the board, everything looked fake, well I was not convinced. The words were there, they were uttered correctly, the gestures were there and still...something felt off. I don't know exactly what, but I call it lack of chemistry. Or maybe the actors were just bored and doing the necessary minimum.
For a story about friends with benefits who could not keep the hands off of each other when they met, the story turned very tame: they'd have sex in strange places but they'd literally just sleep in their own bed! It looked loving and sweet but this constant change of pace was disturbing. On the other hand it does describe their relationship rather well.
Next item: too many relationships: is it really important to pair up everyone? The pairing that needed more time is Manow & Pruek. Waan & Tul's story was original.
Acting was iffy: Win is a pretty doll, Team is often speaking in a whiney nasal tone of a spoiled brat (that was really disconcerting: one minute he would talk like a little child and Win would pat him on a head and then the next he would reason like a grown up he actually is!), Dean is an expressionless robot, Pharm a happy face emoji and Prince a amorphous blob of amoeba.... The comic relief trio (A, Bee, Sea)save the day as does Manow with her quirky larger than life attitude!
The make up department was on strike during filming? Continuity staff as well? Just two items in this section: the abominable make up of Prince and Win's hair colour (which I ended not noticing eventually what I cannot say about Prince's makeup! I still shudder at the thought!)
Sound recording/editing was also bad! There were a lot of scenec wg=here the characters talked while hugging each other and the conversations were practically inaudible!

And still,in spite of all these , I loved the drama and was not bored for one minute! I'd probably rewatch it, sooner rather than later but skipping every scene Prince is in!

Love confession

A girl asks her friend to set her up with his tutor. He prefers keeping him to himself!

A cute short movie (4min) telling the story of a developing relationship between a student and his tutor!

The whole movie takes place at a school desk while two boys silently communicate through written messages and smiles. It is cute, simple, straightforward story. The guys have really good chemistry and it would be nice to see a longer version of . this short movie.
It is a single set, interiour, filming being focused of writing messages and though sound editing might be a bit off, it is perfect for what it is and what it tries to convey!

Even as it is, describing a moment ending with a kiss, is spot on expressing tension, apprehension, fear : every emotion a teenage boy might feel as he discovers the rollecoaster ride that is the first love and the confession!

Why is beauty so important?

Ever since I started watching asian dramas just over two years ago, I noticed, and for my european mentality rather odd, the importance put on being pretty, beautiful, handsome, cute! Every time people met for the first time, the next phrase after introduction would be "You are so pretty!" (or something similar!). Where I come from, commenting on person's looks/esthetics is considered rude(and used ONLY for children!) so these phrases I often heard in dramas were and still are so disconcerting and extremely superficial in my book!
So, imagine my wonder when I started this jdrama where all everyone talks about is being cute! It is a story of a 29 year old man who has been successful in life only because of his cuteness . One day he meets an mysterious man who warns him that he'll stop being cute when he turns 30. That shakes him up and he starts unwittingly changing also under the influence of a new coworker! She is his complete opposite: serious, rigid and robotic but he falls for her. And he discovers, as well, that he is a competent professional and a caring person, which he never really considered himself to be!
The actors portrayed the characters beautifully. The office drama was not too heavy and even the loosing cuteness plot was not to dramatic: the main character accepted it as a fact and moved on! I have one little casting problem: the mysterious older man is supposed to be the ML's version from the future but the actor playing him is taller than the ML. People usually shrink not grow taller as they age!
In any case this drama is not to be taken seriously: it is a bit of lightweight fluff, fun to watch and very enjoyable and though it mentions the effects of beauty in the work environment, it is not really considered as a major problem!
I would just like to know where this obssession with the outside beauty in asian cultures comes from. I guess I'll need to do some serious research! In the meantime, let's all enjoy this sweet drama!
