What a Mess

The show has some interesting characters forming unique relationships in some complex situations. This could have been a pretty good show. Instead it's just a mess. Part of me wants to organize my thoughts more before posting, but I don't want to put any more time into this show. It's not worth it.

The main characters just don't act rationally at times. The secondary characters include Mi Gu, possibly the dumbest character I have seen in cdramas, and Zhuo Ran, who exists mainly to torture the two leads in spite of his claims to the contrary. The various minions in the show are similarly constructed, doing whatever they can to harm the leads with no regard for their own safety. Midway through I had lost my suspension of disbelief, as I could feel the writer trying to make the viewer feel sad or scared or happy, and it's all too heavy handed to accept.

The overall plot line is incoherent. There's a weird tangent on one, and only one, of the FL's patients. The FL's boss has a big change in his life, and then he mostly, but not completely, disappears. There's a cute cat, who also fades away (maybe that's fortunate because a bird shows up). One of the important secondary characters is stuck in a dangerous situation, and nobody seems to have any desire to get him out of that trouble. The extended military training scenes are... I don't know what their purpose was, and it almost felt like the funding for the show depended on support from the People's Liberation Army.

The acting is OK, but the ML felt a bit flat to me. I had seen the FL in a couple of other shows, where she was pretty good, but here I felt her character was inconsistent. The main villain is not convincing. One minor issue, the ML's aunt is played by an actress who looks way too young for the part.
