Regarding the white, powdery makeup - it could be based on the style of the Wei Jin period. Based on some of the men's costumes (the squarish "vests" in the first few episodes), the costumes look like they were inspired by the Wei-Jin period. Thank you for the translation. My Chinese is very basic and I rely on English subs so I miss out a lot on the poetic parts! Even in my lack of understanding of the poetic parts, I find many dialogues in this drama deep, meaningful and profound. This is one of a few handful of dramas that I cannot afford to multitask when watching. This drama made me think a lot and left a lasting impression on me.
