The dark truth behind standing up for yourself

I just finished the drama and tried to grasp how I feel about it. Besides the amazing fighting choreography, I got outstanding young actors that believably portray how violence can turn you absolutely numb and how even the weakest kids can do unimaginable things if tortured too long. But what I actually liked the most about the show was the overall message I personally perceived from it: Standing up for yourself is nothing romantic. It's nothing pretty. It's nothing glorious. Most of the time it's just ugly and painful.

If you want a show that portrays real life you won't like this. Given all the damage they took since episode 1 they all would be in a coma or dead already. But who is watching dramas for them to be realistic? Watch it for the entertainment. For the grim realisation that sometimes if you defend yourself you won't be any better than your oppressors. But that's how life goes. And that's the realistic part about this drama. Action - Reaction. Just that sometimes your reactions are as bad as the actions of the people who hurt you in the first place. It's an endless cycle. It's not romantic. It doesn't have an happy ending. There are some happy moments but in the end it's just a drama about some traumatized highly violent children that aren't heroes but just kids who are tired of getting disrespected and beaten up. Kids who become absolute lunatics themselves and instead of recognizing that they could try to end things peacefully they just take the same measures as the villains - who in fact also are just crazy traumatized kids. They only ever realize it when the damage is already done. There's nothing nice about that drama. And that's what makes it so damn good.
