I don't know the science behind this, but a lot of straight women enjoy seeing two men share deep emotional bonds or romantic moments. often finding that more exciting than traditional heterosexual relationships.
As for BL writing, I agree, because It's mostly written by women, most BL feels unrealistic for men to watch. That said, the BL market used to be different from the gay market, though they do overlap sometimes. But lately, there have been big changes because of the LGBTQ+ community. Because of this shift in the audience, BL has started to introduce more realistic/mixed themes.
