I feel like in autistic circles of the Internet this show is criminally overlooked, which is a shame because Michito is genuinely one of the most well-developed autistic characters I have ever come across. Especially for characters who are more visibly autistic, like Michito, it is so incredibly rare to have anything like "internal motivations" or "a character arc" which sounds really sad but that's just the way things have been for a long time. There are a lot of little bits and scenes that I love to rewatch but one of them is when Michito has a conversation with Onodera (who is also autistic) about their support situations, which prompts Michito to think about his own future. It's bits like this that help avoid falling into the "autistic character just constantly gets passively pushed around by circumstances" trap. The only thing I would keep in mind is that this series portrays a sort of platonic ideal of what support for an autistic adult like Michito looks like. Which is fine, the point of the series isn't how difficult life can be as an autistic person, it's not a documentary, the vibes are intentionally "cosy" (which I liked, don't get me wrong) but there is a lot of unacknowledged privilege in their living situation that the average person may not be aware of (basically everyone around Michito is infinitely patient and understanding, he has access to a plethora of of support services, he generally appears to face very little systemic barriers due to his disability). Again, this is not a bad thing because that's not the point of the series and I do really love the general "soft" feeling of the story, but if you're looking for something gritty this is not it (well the whole domestic abuse situation is on the darker side but autism-wise it isn't very gritty at all).I watched this series when it first came out and I was so excited every week on the day a new episode dropped.
The pacing is on the slower side which I feel adds to the kind of "wholesome" feel even if the main plot deals with serious topics like domestic abuse. Hiroto's character arc is kind of predictable from episode 1.
In general I would recommend this series to anyone looking for a good series with an autistic character where autism isn't the main focus. In terms of similarities to other autistic characters, to me ones that have a similar "feel" would be Move to Heaven and Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
