I will be in Tohoku (the region) for a year on this particular contract, I hope to extend my stay there for another year after that and move somewhere else for another three years.

Not in Japan, it is a cash society ^_^ I MIGHT, emphasis on MIGHT, open an account at a bank in Tokyo eventually that has a branch in the USA. The only reason I would do that is so I can repatriate funds to a mutual fund and IRA. That is about the only reason.

I will just take another (hopefully higher paying) job after two years. Still in Japan. Maybe even somewhere more rural than where I am posted now ^_^ I am going to work on making contacts so I can find another job.

I might, but..... it will add to my electricity bill! I am not going to use heat during winter, or rather, I am only going to keep my room at about 40F. Maybe 35F... Point being, I am a frugal bitch. Actually, I might be downright miserly.
