The Illusion of Empowerment vs. True Equal Footing

I am incredibly exhausted by the recurring trope in dramas where a show markets itself as a "game of wits" between two clever leads, only to completely rig the playing field. When a drama introduces an omniscient, all-knowing male lead who secretly pulls all the strings and "protects" the female lead behind her back, it doesn't feel romantic—it feels patronizing.
A female lead isn't empowered just because she is given high martial status or a sharp tongue, especially if the writing forces her to operate under blind spots while the male lead holds the cheat sheet from day one. It reduces her brilliant efforts into a performance for his benefit and reinforces the tired societal norm that a strong woman ultimately needs a clever man to steer her universe.
True romance and female empowerment belong in stories like The Best Thing. We need more dramas that portray adults on an absolute equal footing, where characters have independent lives, their own separate gravity, and a relationship built on genuine pursuit and mutual respect—not a rescue mission disguised as love.
