News An immersive watching experience into the Art of Kabuki
Beautiful. Despite knowing very little about Kabuki, I felt like falling in love with this Art, growing with the main character while following his journey.
The storyline was masterfully crafted, well-paced and made sense as it depicts the life of a Kabuki master, from the beginning of his career, made of highs and lows. As he evolves, the historical context in which he plays also change.
Even if I am pretty sure that I probably missed a lot on the cultural aspects, the movie really managed to get my brain going. Not only was it a feast for the eyes, it also conveyed a lot of nuances and insights on the Art of Kabuki. It made me appreciate how age and experience are revered in Kabuki with the importance that veterans carry.
I must admit that I am not sure to have grasped all the subtlety of the Art and to really have understood why the hero is considered as such a prodigy from a young age because for the very amateur eye, it is a bit difficult to grasp the difference in talents between him and the others...
However, as the movie progressed, as a viewer, I felt gaining in understanding, staring at the gestures, the poses, the dances...as well as listening to the voices and sounds. By the end of the movie, I could feel my mind shifting and though still being very much a beginner on this Art, I am quite convinced I somewhat developed a genuine appreciation for the beauty of it and what to look at...And that's saying a lot about how a great watching experience it was !
The acting was amazing. I don't think I ever saw Yoshizawa Ryo in anything but he was incredible. I also loved Kurokawa Soya and I am more and more convinced that he is bound to do amazing things as he grow older. Last but not least, Yokohama Ryusei for sure impressed me, his role was so far from Nevertheless, I was blown away.
I would recommend this to people that are looking for an artistic, tragic and dramatic movie, masterfully crafted and that will take you on a journey through time with its flawed characters, sharing very intense relationships. The sole cinematography is definitely worth the time but do are the acting and writing as well !
