THEY TRIED DOING MANY THINGS, RESULTED TO HALF-ASS STORY
As a zombie enthusiast (I really like zombies from anime and K-dramas like Kingdom, All of Us Are Dead, Train to Busan, I Am a Hero, and other zombie shows from the West) and as someone who likes to watch romcoms, this show hurts me really, really bad. I applaud them for trying to do zombie horror action romcom (emphasizing more on the comedy part), but the way they execute all the genres is half-assed. It’s much better if they just stick to one major genre and run with it.
I would dissect it by the genres. First is zombie—and we can also include the horror genre here because I think the two are inseparable. Zombie-wise, I didn’t care about the zombies, and that’s okay. There are a lot of zombie shows that don’t fully explain the characteristics of their zombies (like Zombieland, etc.). But they also have the “special kind” of zombie trait, where the transformation of a human to a zombie is affected by how far the infection is from the brain. They also have the feature that when a human drinks alcohol, it can prevent them from turning. If they have all those special treatments, then they need to establish the characteristics of a zombie (if they can smell, if they can hear, or if they have enhanced features), because that’s how you can establish how the special treatment works—even if they don’t have a medical background or a medical professional. Oh, and don’t get me started on the “magic zombie” scenes where a zombie just comes out of nowhere. It’s just a lame way to move the story. This happens a lot of times in the show. Again, if they want to create horror scenes, they need to first establish the characteristics.
Now onto the action part—especially the soldiers. How the fuck do soldiers move like that? Even if the majority of them are just enlisted, they should easily fend off zombies. The captain and the second-in-command also act like they’re not soldiers. And mind you, almost all of the casualties among the soldiers could’ve been prevented if they just acted like soldiers (like all the casualties on the rooftop). I also like how Jisoo stumbles and, like, for an hour she just reminisces about their past life—like, dude, you’re in a zombie apocalypse, get a grip, will you? And the alcohol part—it was so cringe that you’re in a zombie apocalypse and y’all are drinking? Might as well get yourself a zombie pet and let them bite you.
For the romcom (I’ll merge them into one because I have so little to say about the romance part), in terms of romance, I didn’t care about their relationship, even though they had scenes about their past and how they fell in love with each other. It’s like they’re trying to merge two different K-dramas into one forcefully, instead of creating a romcom inside a zombie horror. And to be honest, I cared more about the romance between the soldier and the hotel manager. You need to create romance inside the scene—not just force people to acknowledge that the two were in love with each other in the past.
About the comedy—I admit some jokes are a hit, especially how In-ho says his name with a funny tone, but that’s just funny at first and annoying in the long run. And to be honest, I can’t think of anything that made me laugh about the show. It was so bland. I don’t get why people say it was a good show.
And additionally, it’s my first time seeing Jisoo act. I didn’t listen to others when they said she isn’t a good actress, but for fuck’s sake, I should have listened to them. She can’t act. Just stick to singing.
