There are always examples of all motivations. When I write comments it is just based on the research literature.....so there are exceptions.

Thank you for sharing this book. Each person is on their own life journey so to have more of a grasp of these social trends by genders and cultures the need to establish the true cause and effect experientially is one approach. Seeking fulfillment outside of self is a bit like robbing Peter to pay Paul without fist deciding why do I need to seek either. To me it is the dishonesty and disrespect of a person you claim to "love"....when the act itself is about self. There are no winners but the act fragments the soul.

Insightfully written! In one sense you can see the relationship dysfunction in marriages and family relationships via dramas. This mirrors the dysfunctional relationships culture to culture, country to country etc. The EQ levels seem to be either very high or very los with not much in-between but a bell curve screwed toward the very low. A fragmentation of sorts that with many people claiming to be "awakening" that the EQ scores don't appear to mirror that progress.

Research project funding comes via options. Years ago we did uni grants via foundations....this is part of the privately contracted research which comes in a wide range of topics tied to the "ologies"...psychology, social psychology, sociology, and anthropology.

True, both genders cheat. They cheat for very different reasons, different frequencies, and with different results. I am not supporting this behaavior for either gender, but men tend to cheat for recreation in a combination of opportunity with both women they know (and that the wife knows) and randomly say on a business trip in a bar.

Women cheat as revenge, when they feel slighted or ignored/unappreciated and at different time of their lives then men. There is a key difference. If a woman is 80-90% happy in the relationship....she is not going to cheat. This is not true for men. Regardless of how happy they are, they will cheat. It is key to note that the trends differ based on country/culture and by gender with number of extramarital partners.

South Korea, for example has many current issues between men and women with large numbers of SK women refusing to date or marry SK men. This is due large issues of sexual assault, drugging women in bars, date rape, and physical abuse of women. There are hundreds of cases and discussions including support groups on social media platforms. They are not the only country with the issue, but they are one of the countries that openly
advertises their behaviors via dramas.

China has big issues with polygamy and has since BC. They just rename it
but as the country has grown in wealth....the wealthy men have expanded their "second wives". This is also on display in their dramas. Some estimates show that as much as 40% of the high end luxuary purchases in jewelry, clothing, etc in China are purchased for "mistresses or second wives" . It is difficult to tell the difference between a mistress, second wife, Erani, and sex worker in China, but it is an industry unto itself with some young new college graduate women choosing mistress as a career. Cheating is the one topic all women tend to agree on across the planet. As a gender psychologist/ researcher, it is surprising how consistent the data is decade to decade.

Your sentiments of hoping it helps women is also my sincere hope. The ONLY people who can stop the abuse of women is a combination of the women themselves, places for them to seek assistance, and other men who may not be cheaters or abusers....BUT are silent on the topic making their silence a form of approval. It is interesting to see how amazing the younger professional women are taking a stand by simply exiting marriage and children.

There are mazing stories that are positive about China's history which could easily be told in a compelling way without all the sexual dysfunction. Cheers, Hope

True. We were certainly surprised when we did the study. The hypocrisy alone was over the top. China does not permit K-pop groups to perform there or BL dramas but I guess the abuse of women is ok. It begs a further question about the Chinese women. Between the cheating men and the abusive MILs, the fact any marriages occur is pretty surprising.

South Korea has it's own issues tied to abusing women. Here are some of the references. This may or may not be a study we undertake simply because the content of these social science studies can be emotionally difficult on the research team. That is true to a certain extent, but it is also both the writers choice and they make tons of money. Scripts such as "Hidden Love" had none of that, so there is a wide range between this drama story and that of "You are my Glory, Love 020, or Glory of Special Forces" to name a few others. Usually you can tell bast on the cast where cheating will fit into the script.

This is 2023, but having just finished a research project for a client on cheating husbands and mistresses/concubines in the 21st century called Erani....history is definitely alive and well in China. One-third of all high-end merchandise in China is purchased for mistresses/Erani. It is difficult to determine the difference between a mistress, a concubine, and a sex worker....so the term Erani or second wife could cover all three. It is such a problem we did laugh wondering if there were different social score points depending on the type. Do a YouTube search and see for yourself if interested.

As expected this one doing greatly in CHINA ( TV ratings & Tencent Index) 🥲🥲🥲, and people want C writers…
We just finished a research project on the topic of cheating men and concubines in the 21st century *which are known as Ernai or second wives. The role of Mistress in society is a type of Erani with some young women graduating college planning to pursue this role as a "career" of sorts. Ironic since the number of other young women are opting out of marriage in total in China is very large.

Turns out Chinese dramas aren't as fictional as many think. The findings were not surprising but disappointing. Wives over-react and respond emotionally too quickly. In this series she realizes she must have a strategy, evidence, and a plan. That is the same in real life as well. How the "revenge" or her own "survival" post divorce ends up is always an interesting tutorial.

Title Two Families
Some of the best dialogue ever written with performances that pull you into both the scene and the exchanges between the characters. With so much dysfunction and psychosis, it becomes difficult to separate what should be the moral norm from what is the real moral norm in the plotlines. The ML and FL performances are captivating. NOTE---not a drama for the faint of heart.

Thanks for the insight. There is an audience for everything in dramas which is often more interesting than the dramas themselves in looking at the demographics for the options. Cheers.
On The Elegant Empire Sep 3, 2023
Title The Elegant Empire Spoiler
Missed potential in executing the storyline as overly dramatic theatre-like movements and voices normally needed for projection on a stageplay are overdone for a small-screen drama. The exaggerated facial expressions and amateurish blocking.....for example, when the two men shove one another around and end up pushing into the child....one would wonder if the director was absent that day which could easily result in the injury of the child. Interesting color choices in the wardrobe for the lead characters but the lead characters appear clownish in several of the scenes. Certainly not the "elegance" either the title or the promo photo would lead you to expect in the drama.
We tried turning off the sound and reading the subtitles which helped eliminate the screeching, but the focus shifted to the exaggerations described above overwhelming the viewing. Hard to believe this nonsense will continue til Christmas through 100 episodes. We look for drama examples and potential investments in scriptwriters etc. --- (our team reviews about 35-40 each quarter) --- for the university courses this would be a potential for comparative analysis between this "what not to do" example and several of the excellent dramas that have been released this year. Even our interns struggled to take the production seriously lol.
Time is a valuable commodity so we will not continue viewing this drama. It is key to note that even though it is poorly done....that does not mean it won't get views---at least at first---but what it does normally indicate is that the real money in dramas is repetitious viewing overtime.....it is doubtful this darma will hit those targets.
On Life Is a Long Quiet River Aug 24, 2023
A long, repetitive journey through typical cheating husbands with no sense of remorse for their actions, out-of-control MLs, a series of female stereotypical archetypes, and too many characters all doing versions of the same thing. The absence of 21st-century reality in this series was remarkable. Women in these dramas are slap-happy, soiled doves, weak milk-toast, or chasing someone else's husband (either a friend or family member). In the course of a week, I interface with dozens of international women and I have yet to hear a giggle, have a discussion sharing adulterous "secrets", or discuss families that ever resemble drama families. In this series, I started with no subtitles, then shifted to English thinking my Mandarin skills must have regressed. When the English subtitles were just as nonsensical in plotlines, I ended the series in Spanish....so bottom line is it was a 12-episode story spread over 35 episodes which provided plenty of focused time on language practice.

I really don´t understand the character of Li Cheng the husband of Fang Yuan. First he lets a third party interfere…
Well stated. This actor plays the same role over and over and over.... the same cheating father, no backbone, no brains, just the same cheating behaviors. I thought this was just another version of the same old tired script of who cheats with who totally void of loyalty or responsibility to family and wife. AI must be writing these.

Screwing other women while in "committed" relationships is his pattern. That is why he and the sales manager competitor broke up....he cheated on her as well. The partnership for survival between the wife and the female sales manager is an excellent alliance reflecting the support women do provide to toter women. Women globally hate cheating men.....except for the trashy chicks who spread 'em for anyone and everyone.

The more interesting plotline is "Who gets the heroine" in the end?? Mr. Chen, or her new boss?? Both are excellent allies for her (even though she may not appreciate it at this point in the story). Any votes or insights into which is the better-fit post-divorce for her? Clearly, the husband is "over" both at home and at work.

Actually I saw once in a YouTube video that it's normal for women to cheat on their spouses and that women are…
Cheating rates don't differ between married couples and "couples in long term relationships" without marriage. The issue seems to be the inability of half the population to not be able to be in monogamous long term "committed" relationships. Where do we learn about how to develop long-term relationships? Most folks look around them for examples and tend to mirror what they see as an example. This is the ultimate unifier of human behavior ironically. It does say a great deal about which chakra society seems to be stuck. Cheers, Hope.
