This is basically so bad its good. For all its quirks and flaws, I can't help but find myself giggling at their interactions. It is so wholesome and pure and just makes me feel happy. Objectively this is like a 7 or 8 at best, but I'm going to rate it 10/10 cause it is just so cute. I like the topic that it is addressing and I hope it develops further. I think episode 4 is a slight step down from episode 3 but I can tell that there are hints of something deeper going on. The fact that they take the time in the script to have some deep conversations (like with Nhai and his friend in the gay bar) in deep contrast to the funny stuff going is real indication there is something more to the seemingly cardboard personalities of these characters and I think that will be exciting to find out. I really hope there is more character revelations in each episode to really help me continue to be immersed because I am still curious to see where this goes. It has potential to be one of my favorite comfort and wholesome BLs of the year (or something else if it takes a slightly unexepcted turn like emotional etc.)
This is one of my favorite chinese modern dramas. The thing is while the e-sports portrayal is not really accurate, it isn't the main selling point. First, the chemistry between Cheng Xiao and Xu Kai was very apparent, even though Cheng Xiao's acting was not great. (although she is getting better). Second, the supporting cast were all great actors to the point that I didn't find any weak point among them. I especially loved Fatty and the ex-boyfriend's acting in particular. I can't wait to see them (especially the latter) in future dramas. They did their jobs so well and had great chemistry as a whole cast. Third, the story is not mind blowing but the topics it deals with are quite relatable and relevant. For example the part when Tong Xiao got beaten by her best shikigami handled by someone else can actually be relatable in another context. It can be seen as when another person beats you in your best subject and you have been the number 1 student the whole time. It isn't e-sports specific. It talks about dreams, passion, gender equality, job evolution (where being a gamer is now a job for example), friendship and teamwork. It is inspirational too. I personally got inspired by many of the scenes in this drama. Also, the drama is VERY rewatchable. I got to Ep. 12 without even realizing how much time passed. It is very endearing.
In conclusion, this drama will have a special place in my heart. It is not perfect, it is definitely one of the best out there (which is why I still gave it a 10/10 in official review)
I'm very happy to see that Yang Yang has improved from his Love 020 days. His acting was very two dimensional back then. I watched King's Avatar to see if he had improvement and he definitely made me cry multiple times in that drama. In YAMG, the range of gestures, body language and expressions he uses have further expanded. He definitely looked the part. Whether he was happy and in love with Jing Jing or insecure, anxious and worried about the future when he was split between staying with his current job or taking the job in the investment bank.
YAMG has definitely made me a fan of Yang Yang. I was on the verge after King's Avatar, but YAMG sealed the deal. At this point, anyone who call's Yang Yang's acting wooden is lying to themselves. He is more than a handsome face and has proved to us that he CAN act!!!
This is my first drama with Dilreba and I am pleasantly surprised. She was very natural the whole way through. I will look out for her other dramas in the future.
