The rating is very high in China. The score here has a lot to do with the PR team, they should have focused on the story description being about the mom and daughter relationship, which is what the book is about. This becomes even clearer as you get into the final episodes of the drama. If the PR team presented the story as a family drama about a mother and daughter and not leads romance, I think less people would have been frustrated and jumped ship with poor reviews before it finished.

I loved this story. I can relate to it on many levels. My mom was not the easiest person growing up, she still isn't. She came from very little, my dad came from a lot. Her views and values were vary different from my father. He has now passed on. I've been on a 3 year journey of rebuilding a healthier relationship, after moving back to my hometown. It's not easy. She doesn't understand my life choices, my independence, and my free spirit. It scares her that I don't choose a "traditional" life - She values safety and security. She is trying, going to therapy, and taking classes to improve herself emotionally and mentally. She is changing for the better one step at a time.
The book was about the mother and daughter relationship, the PR for the drama made her appear as a side character, in turn the wrong demographic came for the ride, it set people up for false expectation. This did very well in China where more people have had expose to the book, and relate closely with the character types presented in the story.
Although the leads relationship was secondary, it didn't feel lost or pushed on the side. I enjoyed their relationship and all it brought to the table, as well as most of the side character.
Overall, despite the moms anticts , it was charming and sweet story of growth, healing and untimately love and acceptance. I think that the path most of us are on in this life, we can't pick the way we come into this world, but we can choose how we embrace it and what we become before we leave it.

I don't typically watch this genre but somehow here I am .... so far I find it rather cute and amusing.

Nooooo.... Then you completely missed the point. She's not arrogant. She isn't manipulative in a devious way.
She is consumed by fear, all of her actions come from trying to protect her family from suffering.
When you come from poverty, as she has since childhood, it only takes one thing to cause your world to fall into a tailspin. This has been her life story. It's like having a boat that always leaks, you get it afloat only to have another leak appear, each time it costs you money, each time you save money, it lost again to one more leak. She doesn't want her daughter to live that life. She makes decisions out of the trauma of her poverty. It's the condition in which she funtions from after years of a repeat cycle. She feels responsible for the marriage falling apart, she feels responsible for her daughters future, she overcompensates but she also pushes her fears are motivating her thought process.

She is not trying to sell her daughter, She believes (deep down) she is protecting her daughter from the same financial hardship she endured being poor her whole life.
She's consumed by fear, even though she loves her daughter, she feels guilt/responsibility for her fate. Out of anxiousness, she will do anything in her power to push her vision of a secure future, in fear there won't be another way. They come from different eras in time. Two different worlds. What she can't see is making her daughter suffer more by forcing her to be in a relationship that only provides money but not what makes her truly happy.

Not yet halfway through this story... After watching the previews for 17-20 episodes ...It confirmed several suspicions I've had about where things have been heading with Grandma. Ahhh! :(
I'm looking forward to the twists and turns of the lead relationship both professionally and personally, As much as I hope the FL's mother mellows out a bit, old habits are hard to break, so won't make any bets on it just yet.

There is a lot of frustration with the FL's mother. It resonates with a Chinese audience, it's causing internal angst for viewers from a cultural background that values independence and self-expression over filial piety.

I can't understand why the rating is so low, the story is getting better with each episode. The overall group rating should be nothing less than an 8. It's a 9.25 for me at 14 ep.

She is not my favorite. I do think she is misunderstood. She has fears about her childrens future. She is a very common realistic personality type in China. Chinese viewers are not put off by her at all.

I agree the grandmother is a soft- warm reassuring hug in a sea of cold and selfish characters . I love every moment she is on the screen, no matter who is opposite of her.

I'm finding this drama more and more satisfying with each episode. MCH is growing without compromising her values. YZM heart is softening up little by little. I am curious about his "plan" for the company, and how his internal changes will impact his mission. I love every moment grandma surfaces on the screen. She's such a smart-charming lady, so she must be a step a ahead of YZM. ( fingers x crossed)
