Title Where the Mask Ends
So am I the only one finding the evil twins villainy cartoonish? Like it’s not a refined/ underhanded or brutal evil like other villains, she’s so over the top that it’s taking me out of the drama. No matter her status she can’t simply get away with trying the murder the daughter of the grand tutor, she and her family would face major consequences. Even her act of killing the girls’s maid is just batshit behaviour. So she spoke badly about you and your mom you bludgeon her to death?! In the open? You push the daughter of the grand tutor off the ledge because she gave the guy you like a gift? I wish she was more nefarious but in a calculated way. It doesn’t make any sense to me unless she’s an actual psychopath with no ability to temper her actions on even a basic level? I get she’s supposed to be evil but it’s not in a believe able way to me - too over the top and too insane. Am I the only one having a tough time with her cartoonish characterization?

Cdrama or Kdrama they are never really made for men. The primary audience is female. They are written keeping…
Oh lady lots of women loved nirvana in fire - and for the story itself and how it depicts deeply emotional bonds with characters in a way that did not need to be romantic to be emotionally meaningful. Yes it’s not a romance driven story, even saying the romance is secondary is over inflating the degree of romance in the plot but that doesn’t mean that women who watched the show somehow enjoyed it less then their male counterparts. I watched NIF knowing the type of show I was going into - I don’t always want a show with romance as the main plot point, I actually in general prefer when the romance is secondary to the story not the main focus. I find stories with romance as the main theme generally are not as well written or I consider them “candy shows” not ones that typically stomp on your heart and stay with you after they are done. So I’d adjust your expectations of what women typically like to watch (yes, I agree women typically watch romance dramas and enjoy them more than men) but also understand not all shows are built with a romance centered plot and many many women who watch non- romantic driven show enjoy them as much as anyone else. People’s general preferences are one thing but NIF was never touting itself as a romantic story so no one went into that show thinking that they were going to get that. It’s a revenge story with a whole of country scope.

Generally speaking, how would you guys rate the romance in this from 1-10?I haven't started yet, because I wanted…
Ooh I have a drastically different take - the story and plot is a solid 9/10 but the romance aspect I think would leave many ppl wanting more (I felt he fell first and did not see her feelings reflected until much later and certain plot points follow this trajectory). For me I found the romance aspect lacking so I would rate it a 4-5/10. Great story, acting, and characters just not a great romance drama so I wouldn’t recommend it to ppl on that basis

While I love the drama for the emotional scenes and plot, I’m happy I didn’t watch it for the romance … because it’s just not doing it for me. And the kiss- what was that lol?

nooooooooo hope not!! This is the one show I am up to date with and pausing for the weekend is not cool! Oh well,…
I am speculating but the fact they didn’t release the schedule for the whole week like they usually do makes me think we’re breaking for a bit :( I’m also fully caught up and don’t want to delay so it’s a bummer for sure. Maybe I’m wrong though - fingers crossed

I do agree they’re all crazy, but there’s still more to Du Cique and Zhao XingTang’s stories. And yes, also…
Oh thank god! I was expecting to find her dead or something so this is great news - the show isn’t scared to show sad stories so I was fully expecting a brutal end for her. Thanks for the update :)

So he grants her freedom from indentured servitude only to trap her into marriage? Or was it his parents/grandparents…
Same! I’m so happy she expresses her anger with him. He never even confessed he liked her, never spoke to her parents, he forced her hand to marry him - in any other situation we would hate him. It’s great he loves her but sometimes things don’t work out - he went to extremes to keep her. Quite selfish of him honestly. I wonder how they will overcome it

Dude! Thank you for this. This genre is so me to a T. I sprinkle you with fairy dust and may all your wishes come…
I’ve added so many to my TBR collection! If you haven’t already read these I recommend Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor, The folk of the air series by holly black, and if you’re okay with BL Dark rise by C.S Pacat - it’s a trilogy with 2 books out, the second book altered my brain chemistry.

YES! It's such a good book Ilona Andrews are a miracle writing team. The brain rot i experiences after book 1…
I love their other series too hidden legacy is a fun one to get into and my all time favourite is their first one Kate Daniel’s series. It takes a bit longer to get into but Kate is such a well written female character.

Does anyone else feel the shows writing took a hit these past few episodes? Like I still love the show and am really enjoying it but the whole abduction plot feels really contrived. Like she got abducted TWICE come on! The forced married is fine plot wise but the abduction was kinda absurd. Though I loved the reunion with Ji’er I just pray she gets a good ending and is freed and they get to her in time before the madam kills her or worse. Also why are all the female love interests for ML so batshit crazy? The first one had some understandable reasons but I don’t see how her cross dressing lover made any sense? And then the du siblings seemed to just want to watch the Lin family burn for no reason? And this duchess lady just went straight crazy right away - I’m not following why these women are written so poorly. The maids and other characters are much better written so I’m just a bit disappointed the love interests are all insane.

I am all for going beyond the regular trope or cliches in this drama, but I can't help but look forward to tmr,…
Poor Lanxiang though - being strong armed into marrying him is messed up. And to go back to that house as the new wife when she was a maid is going to be hella awkward for her. Her in-laws might have to accept her but they won’t be happy or make things easy for her. The maids while lovely ppl will feel awkward I gues serving their old peer and lanxiang is going to feel awkward as hell too. Not to mention the fact that this will bring back ptsd for her and she just wanted to be with her parents! I know it’s a drama and we love ML but nope I’m pissed and I’m going to love her anger at him for forcing her into marrying him.

Lanxiang and Ji'er reunion made me cry
I’m really worried about what the madam is going to do to Ji’er, I’m afraid Lanxiang’s efforts to free her will be in vain. :(

Seems like we’re going to experience a bit of a delay in the airing of this show this weekend. The posted schedule only shows episodes being released until Sept 24 (up to episode 30 for svip). I guess this is due to the mid autumn festival? So hopefully we’re only on break from Sept 25-27 and the show resumes airing Sept 28 🙏🏻

I wonder when FL will no longer be in servitude? The three trailers kinda spoil a lot about the show and some plot points seem wild but so far the writing is solid. I'm optimistic, and wish I waited until more episodes released before starting, the need to binge is too hard

As cute as she is, Xiaolan is really going to be the downfall of FL if no one keeps her in check. She's innocent…
She's giving me death flags - her naivety especially to this scheming lady is going to either cause major issues for FL or its going to end in her death. In Yanxi Palace the one innocent maid girl also ends up falling for a trap and dying as a result - i ust get similar vibes
