I decided to read the novel as I was curious how things panned out there, and what I discovered is that it is essentially a completely different story set in same time period with charters of the same name. Liu Yu Shao is a completely different person with a wife who died during the war. Liu Yu Sheng is not a communist and there is no going around Zhou Yao Hua's back and using him to help the communist, instead Liu Yu Sheng straight up tells him that Liu Yu Shao is a communists and asks him to help the his cousin.
>>Liu Yu Sheng looked at his younger cousin, noticing that his beard wasn't shaved, he was slightly tan, his eyes were hidden behind his glasses, and his hair was too long. He felt bad for Liy Yu Shao, it looked like he was having some hard times. [...]. Liu Yu Sheng asked, "how have you been? Did you get married?" Liu Yu Shao was silent for a while before looking up at Liu Yu Sheng. "I did. She died in a mission; I haven't remarried since."<<
