It lacked character development, good drama tho. Chulan was annoying to me like the generic female leads in xianxia lol. He also has a boring writing like a shounen generic main lead. If it weren't for the story, I would have dropped it.

Oh, I am more bothered by the naivety and impulsiveness of the male lead. I don't mind characters with bad intentions if they have decent or good writing.

The writing of a character has nothing to do with an actor's skills/charisma.

Zhang Linghe is good-looking and gave a solid performance. But his character is average to me (I would have liked more complexity). So I will only limit my opinion to Gong Ziyu, not Zhang Linghe. The writing of a character has nothing to do with an actor's performance. You are right.

I didn't like them as much as I would have liked, they were both kinda generically written. I expected more complexity because what I saw in them is not new. Good drama though.

I found him generic but that must be because I have seen several C-dramas with male characters similar to his. Linghe is a good actor tho.

I enjoyed SFL and SML more. There is more complexity.
