I find it hard to believe that Haruna was the first one who didn't sacrifice herself for the girl.
For my part, I understood that Sumiko took 20 years to find someone who would believe her story and, most importantly, who would voluntarily enter Kisaragi Station. The final lie indicates that Sumiko abandoned Asuka while she was protecting her.
