It's not a sad ending. It's quite happy actually because in the whole drama the only thing the leads would worry was how will they be together till the end. Because ML, as a human will die of old age which means they'll only be together for a few decades while few decades FL's life is like few months in her long long years to come. So the ending is the only best ending they can get.
Both the endings say either he dies, becomes a spirit, cultuvates and takes a form and he stays with her eternally. Or, they both become human (her only wish was to become a human) and life for decades and die of old age.
So both ending are good just that we won't get to see it completely that's it lol.
