Came for Yang Yang, stayed for Song Yan and a story that hit harder than expected

💚 Why I Watched:
Honestly? Yang Yang. 😂 That was reason #1. The recommendations and high ratings came second. I was expecting a modern romance, but I didn't expect to get this emotionally invested in the firefighter/medical storyline.

⚖️ What Worked:
What I liked most about Fireworks of My Heart is that the romance isn't the only thing carrying the story. Song Yan's life as a firefighter and Xu Qin's work as an ER doctor actually matter. Their professions create some of the strongest parts of the drama, especially the rescue and disaster sequences.
The earthquake in Wangxiang was one of my favorite stretches. The cinematography and the scale of the aftermath made the situation feel intense without turning it into just a pretty action sequence. The later fire operation and the investigation into what really caused the building fire also gave the second half a different kind of tension.
And then came Zhan Dapeng. 💔 I was not prepared for his death. The scene that completely broke me was Li Nan sitting alone in the cinema, with the flashbacks of their memories. No big dramatic speech was needed. The two movie tickets and the empty seat beside her said everything.

🚩 What Didn't Work:
The biggest issue for me was the pacing, especially in the first half. The family conflict goes in circles for a while, and there were moments when I wanted Xu Qin to finally stand up for herself instead of letting her adoptive mother's control dictate her choices again.
I understood why Xu Qin struggled. Being adopted, growing up under such a controlling parent, and carrying that sense of obligation explain a lot of her decisions. But understanding her didn't always mean I could justify what she did to Song Yan. Watching her choose her family again just when Song Yan was finally lowering his walls was painful.
Thankfully, her character eventually develops the backbone I was waiting for. By the time she moves in with Song Yan, it feels like she's no longer simply choosing him over her family—she's finally choosing her own life.

❤️ Chemistry:
Song Yan and Xu Qin have the kind of chemistry that works because of their history. Their relationship isn't immediately sweet. There's resentment, unfinished feelings, and a lot of things left unsaid.
Song Yan's loyalty is probably one of the biggest reasons I stayed invested. Ten years later, despite everything that happened, his feelings were still there underneath all that coldness. And when he finally lets himself love Xu Qin again, the change in him is so satisfying.
Yang Yang also really worked for me as Song Yan. 😅 The firefighter uniform definitely helped, but eventually it was Song Yan's character that kept me watching.

🔥 Angst:
HEAVY. Especially once the firefighter storyline starts hitting harder.
This drama gave me relationship angst, family angst, disaster/rescue angst, grief, and then the whole conspiracy surrounding the building fire. The earthquake arc was already intense, but Zhan Dapeng's death and its aftermath took the emotional damage to another level.

🌿 Green Flags / Comfort:
Song Yan. ❤️
Not perfect, not emotionless, and definitely carrying his own wounds—but loyal, responsible, protective, and deeply committed to his people.
I especially liked that his loyalty isn't limited to Xu Qin. His concern for his firefighter team and their families made him feel more complete as a character.

🐢 Slow Burn:
YES. Very much.
This is a second-chance romance that takes its time. At first, I was almost frustrated watching Song Yan remain so cold while it was obvious he was still affected by Xu Qin. But that slow thaw eventually became one of the things I enjoyed most.

🏷️ Genre Type:
Modern Romance | Medical | Firefighter/Rescue | Family | Second Chance Love | Workplace | Disaster/Action

📝 Description:
A firefighter captain and an ER doctor reunite ten years after being forced apart by family opposition. What begins with resentment and unresolved feelings gradually turns into a second chance at love, while their demanding professions place them in the middle of fires, disasters, rescues, and life-or-death situations.

Final Thoughts:
I genuinely enjoyed this more than I expected.
I started it because Yang Yang is very, very handsome. 😂 But somewhere along the way, I stopped watching because of Yang Yang and started watching because I actually cared about Song Yan, Xu Qin, and the people around them.
The firefighter storyline was a huge plus for me. The rescue operations, earthquake aftermath, the building fire, and the emotional consequences of losing a teammate gave the drama more weight than a typical modern romance.
Xu Qin also grew on me. I struggled with her choices early on, especially when she repeatedly let her adoptive family come between her and Song Yan. But seeing her finally develop the backbone to make her own decisions made her character arc worth watching.
My only real disappointment is the ending. It is a happy ending, and I liked that Song Yan eventually became accepted by Xu Qin's family. I also liked that the reconciliation wasn't forced into some huge dramatic forgiveness scene—it was quieter and more felt than said.
But after everything these two went through, I WANTED THE WEDDING. 😂 We know they're getting married, we see the plans and the wedding photoshoot, but I still wanted to actually see that wedding happen. After 40 episodes of suffering, give me the damn wedding! 😭
Still, despite the pacing issues and the somewhat rushed final stretch, this turned out to be a much more emotionally engaging modern drama than I expected.
Came for Yang Yang. Stayed for Song Yan. Cried for Li Nan and Zhan Dapeng. And somehow ended up emotionally attached to an entire fire station. 😭❤️‍🔥
