The Revenge Was Brilliant. The Endgame Needed Less Xie Shu.

I was actually watching this alongside Where the Mask Ends while waiting for new episodes, and somewhere along the way, Spring of the Blade became the one I was more invested in because of its strategy, revenge game, and Shen Run. 😂
💚 Green Flags
The chess game. And yes—the original voice. 😂
One of the things that made me excited for this drama even before I started it was Xu Kai finally using his own voice in a period drama. And honestly, hearing his original voice as Shen Run was one of the things I was genuinely looking forward to.
Then came the actual story—and this is where the drama really got me.
The chess game.
This is what hooked me.
Spring of the Blade works best when Shen Run and Qingyuan are actively moving the pieces on the board. There are schemes within schemes, political maneuvering, hidden identities, revenge plans, alliances, betrayals, and characters constantly trying to figure out who is actually one step ahead.
And I really liked that both leads had their own reasons for seeking revenge. It wasn't simply the FL getting dragged into the ML's revenge story. Their goals eventually became intertwined, and that made their partnership much more satisfying.
Shen Run especially was my kind of ML. 😂 Proud, controlled, calculating, dangerous when necessary—and he had that “I already thought three steps ahead of you” energy.
And whenever Shen Run and Qingyuan were actively moving the chessboard, I was ALL IN.
⚖️ Balanced Take
I can understand some of the criticism I've seen from other viewers that the revenge itself sometimes felt less emotionally intense than the premise promised.
I partly agree.
The investigation and uncovering of secrets gradually became more important than the actual revenge. There were moments when I was more interested in how Shen Run and Qingyuan were going to outmaneuver everyone than in the revenge itself.
But I wouldn't call the whole revenge plot weak.
For me, the bigger problem was where the story eventually chose to spend its time.
The drama had a really strong central setup: two survivors, two revenge journeys, and two intelligent leads essentially becoming each other's weapon. Whenever the story stayed focused on that, I was completely in.
Then the final stretch happened.
🚩 Biggest Negative: The Xie Shu Storyline Took Over the Endgame
This is probably my biggest complaint.
I actually appreciated the revelations surrounding the Xie family, especially the truth about Qingyuan's mother and the emotional payoff involving the grandmother.
That part worked.
What didn't work as well for me was how long the story stayed there.
The final episodes became so focused on Xie Shu and the Xie family that the drama started feeling less like the strategic revenge story I had been watching and more like an extended Xie family endgame.
And that's where I felt the imbalance.
Shen Run had been one of the strongest reasons I was watching this drama, so naturally I noticed when his role became less prominent in the final stretch.
The women of the Xie family eventually getting their own paths was actually something I liked. I just think the story could have reached that resolution without stretching the Xie Shu storyline quite that much.
Xu Kai / Shen Run
Xu Kai was one of my biggest wins here.
And honestly, the original voice made the character even more interesting to me. I had been looking forward to hearing him without the usual dubbing, and Shen Run was a good character for him to try it with.
He has that very specific kind of ML presence I enjoy—the controlled, proud, slightly intimidating type who doesn't need to shout to make a scene feel tense.
Shen Run has that “I already thought three steps ahead of you” energy. 😂
I also liked the contrast between his different personas. He can look relaxed and almost carefree on the surface, while underneath, he's calculating everything.
Which is also why I felt the final stretch more strongly.
Once the story became increasingly centered on Xie Shu and the Xie family, I wanted more of Shen Run being Shen Run.
Not necessarily more fighting or more romance—just more of the strategist who made the first part of this drama so much fun to watch.
❤️ Chemistry
Shen Run + Qingyuan = yes.
Their relationship wasn't the reason I started this drama, but it became one of the reasons I stayed invested.
I liked that their romance grew alongside the revenge plot rather than completely replacing it.
They weren't just there to have romantic scenes. Their relationship actually became part of their ability to survive and move forward.
And when they were finally operating as a real team, their dynamic was exactly what I wanted from this drama.
Blade and scabbard indeed.
😭 Angst
There is definitely emotional weight here, especially when the childhood massacre, family secrets, and the truth surrounding Qingyuan's mother start coming together.
But for me, the emotional impact was stronger when it was connected to Shen Run and Qingyuan's personal journey than when the story became increasingly focused on Xie Shu.
The grandmother revelation was one of the moments that landed for me because it wasn't just another plot twist—it finally gave emotional meaning to some of the family history.
🐢 Slow Burn
The romance is a slow build, but thankfully it doesn't feel like a romance drama pretending to be a revenge drama.
The relationship develops while the main story is moving.
And honestly, that's the kind of slow burn I prefer.
Give me strategy + tension + mutual trust slowly turning into love over endless misunderstandings any day. 😂
🎭 Genre Type
Revenge / Historical / Political Intrigue / Mystery / Romance
For me, the strongest part is definitely the strategic revenge and political maneuvering.
If you're going into this expecting a pure romance, this isn't it.
If you enjoy watching characters scheme, investigate, conceal identities, make alliances, and constantly figure out who is playing whom, there's a lot here to enjoy.
📖 Description
Two survivors of a devastating massacre are pulled onto separate paths of revenge.
Shen Run is a calculating strategist hiding behind different identities, while Xie Qingyuan is determined to uncover the truth behind the destruction of her family.
Their paths eventually cross, and instead of becoming obstacles to each other, they become allies—and eventually something much more.
The strongest part of their story is watching them learn to trust each other while navigating family secrets, political power struggles, and revenge.
⭐ Final Verdict
I actually had a really good time with this drama.
For me, Spring of the Blade had the ingredients of a genuinely excellent revenge chess game: strong leads, intelligent maneuvering, political intrigue, hidden identities, and a romance that grew naturally from the story.
And whenever Shen Run and Qingyuan were actively moving the chessboard, I was ALL IN.
The fact that Xu Kai was finally using his own voice in a period drama was also a big part of what made me excited to watch this in the first place—and I'm glad the result worked for me overall.
My biggest issue is simply that the final stretch lost that balance.
The Xie Shu storyline was stretched too far, and because of that, the drama gradually moved away from the very thing that made it strongest for me—the strategic partnership between Shen Run and Qingyuan.
So no, I wouldn't call this a perfect revenge drama.
But I also wouldn't call it a disappointment.
It gave me a strong ML, a capable FL, a satisfying central partnership, plenty of scheming, Xu Kai's original voice, and a romance I actually enjoyed.
I just wish the endgame had trusted its strongest players a little more.
