Because he was abused his whole life. Even if he wanted a different life it's hard to change habits and when his "wife" started abusing him along with everyone else in the manor, I think he fell into habit of accepting it, but internally wanting a new life. this is just what I think. I have no experience in these situations
this has great potential to be a rewatch drama right now. I have high hopes for this and it would be disappointing if the drama took a turn for the worst.
