I'm in agreement with you, from the first episodes it was clear that none of the characters were white or black, all are different shades of grey and the show is still holding onto that. One reason why this is my favourite drama.
I'm too emotional right now, I never thought I would watch A'Sun crying, him scolding Changge, his anger, grief, and helplessness over his mother's loss. I can't love A'Sun enough especially after hearing his principles, thoughts, emotions over his people- Eagle Division, Li Changge, his mother. His character is really really great not just in relation to his relationship with LC but everyone else including his understanding of Young Khan who himself is a pitiful character, a really soft person if only there weren't people who keep reminding him that he needs to fight with A'Sun. Sher wants to do it for his mother. Khatun too is pitiful having married so far from home, so many husbands and not allowed any ounce of warmth not even from her only son.
A'Sun cares for his people just so much, he is full of emotions, never afraid to show them. A'Sun character is unlike a lot of ML I've come across in historicals and even in modern dramas. We all know this. I just can't emphasize enough over how healthy is his actions for just everyone. Him and LC both have regrets pertaining to their mothers, he thought his ignorance towards his mother would keep her safe so he stayed away from her and LC, in her anger was rude towards her mother in the last moments. No one really knows which moment will be the last, both have learnt a lot, still learning a lot. A'Sun, I remember seeing Changge so brave initially ordered to train women of Eagle Division as well. He respects women just so much, it isn't just for LC. He has always been this lovable man who respects everyone equally but LC only has his heart. A'Sun is the human being we all need in our lives. I can glorify A'Sun as greatest ML ever even to greater extent. My feelings are coming after watching episodes till 26, nothing beyond it.
I just finished watching episode 24-25-26, I was avoiding them gaining strength to watch them. I finally did. And the spoilers that I willingly read doesn't waver my emotions a bit. I have a lot to say now, A LOT!
