Title The Atypical Family Spoiler
Their is just as much flaws in the characters of the ML and his family as with the FL and hers. The ML's family…
I'm enjoying the drama very much because the overall story [super-power family has lost their powers; crooked grifters are bonded as a family even though all unrelated] is unique.

After today, I realized why I don't care about the main couple and it's because the only personality trait we understand is that they are victims of past trauma. All of the other characters have distinct personalities, whether it is shy/introverted Yi-na; competitive/sneaky/intelligent Dong Hee; loving/devoted Father-Grandfather (the only one that Yi-na trusted), even the scheming/controlling mothers.

But Gwi-ju and Da Hae? To the extent we know them, everything is based upon their victimhood. That's how they see themselves - as victims. They bore me to tears. What were they like before their trauma? We have no idea - honest/dishonest? cruel or kind? adventurous? Ambitious? Extrovert or introvert? We have no idea.

Title The Atypical Family Spoiler
My new theroy falls in line with one that I saw a while ago after todays episode. So the big clue about the future…
I've mentioned before that I thought Da Hae had her own latent power - there have been three instances where she "sensed" another person near her - Yi-na, Gwi-ju (when he time traveled) and Dong Hee (floating near her window). But I don't believe she is the 6th person hidden behind the curtain in the poster. I guess the question is - has she always known she had a connection?

I kind of hoping it's not Gwiju that save FL from that fire.
You are not alone. For a drama that has many unique and remarkably contra-trope characters, the predictable conclusion seems anti-climatic. So, here's hoping that writers know how to write a truly roller-coaster ride that - although has a predictable happy ending does not travel a well-worn, boringly predictable path to get there..

He hasn't traveled back to events he doesn't remember that I recall? Once he has traveled back though he's able…
Frankly, I'm not sure how this works. But he WAS at the shopping mall earlier (so he could visualize it) and then FL told him he had held her hand. But I don't recall the catalyst for him returning - she told him to think about it or he tried to remember it? He was also at the park earlier - so he could visualize it before he returned with the flowers.

I don't understand the Yi-na watch scene, but he didn't travel back in time to get to the school. He went there to talk to In-a and then saw FL.

Where did you see a red Maserati? I missed it. I noticed the clocks but wasn't paying attention to specific times,…
The very first episode - when Da-hae enters the grounds - she first sees a cave or tunnel entrance and then walks by the cars. One of them is bright red - pretty sure it is a Maserati.
On The Atypical Family May 18, 2024
The concept of TIME is important. I don’t know why, but clocks are featured over and over again in this drama.
Gwi-ju appears in hospital room: 10:35 am
Leaves hospital room (with gold door) at 10:40
School explosion (stopped clock in the rubble): 10:45

Based on how Gwi-ju currently travels back in time to events that he does NOT remember, perhaps he will eventually figure out that he has more control over WHEN he returns as opposed to a specific happy moment/event.
There are also teeny, tiny hints in the intro about “time”.

Unfortunately, I have no interest in the main couple. There is no sparkling dialogue, witty rejoinders, banter - those are the ingredients that I look for "chemistry" between two "characters" (not talking about the actors) and the script doesn’t deliver.

On the other hand, I am still enjoying the other characters, especially Yi-na and Father (who apparently was contacting a former senior detective/"CEO"). There is at least one major twist/event coming that was in a couple of the trailers. And. . . .who does the red Maserati belong to? [my crazy theory: another family member who can make themselves invisible or something else from totally left field.]

I hope that its not the ML who saved the FL from the fire but actually his boss who died. To realize that he tried…
I agree - it's lazy writing to be so predictable. I re-watched the original scenes with the boss - no visible scar or birthmark ono his neck to the extent the viewer could see it.

Title The Atypical Family Spoiler
I thought it was a birthmark, but you are probably correct, it's a scar from the future. It's enough to make her…
Thus far in the drama (current time), he has time traveled/returned ONLY to her and for events that he does not remember. She tells him about an event, he tries to picture it in his mind and he returns. And each time, he "saves" her from something - and it's one reason he guessed that the marriage certificate was probably false - because it didn't involve saving her.

I take that back - I'm not sure why he was there when I-na stole the watch.

Regardless, it isn't mere time travel. They can touch each other - so writer-nim is telling the viewer they have a special connection that somehow breaks the "rule" previously associated with his power. Pound us over the head with the idea that it began when he saved her from the fire (mundane plot). It's the least interesting element of the show because for now it does appear to be like those other dramas you referred to. Honestly, I don't like the ML character so don't care if he is ever happy.

Fortunately, I'm enjoying all of the other characters and I want to know more about them and their history. I'm looking forward to whatever plot twists the writer has in their future. 😎

Okay so! Do we think that scar is a red herring or what? The man that saved her had a scar on his neck. Possible…
I thought it was a birthmark, but you are probably correct, it's a scar from the future.

It's enough to make her doubt that it was him and so she leaves, I guess. Frankly, I don't like their story right now "fated to save her" and there is no rational explanation for their connection except. . . . "fated to save her" and I dislike romances based on fate rather than real, adult feelings. I was fast-forwarding their scenes today because they were long and boring.

But the rest of the crew - all of them interesting with story arcs that are in motion. So, I'm still intrigued by everyone else and will watch for them. Plus, more twists n the family histories are coming, I'm sure of it.

Who drives that bright red Maserati?

And what is the mystery of that cave-like entrance we briefly saw in Episode 1?

Is there another Bok family member? Hmmm, after looking at the latest poster, it’s a good guess.

At this point, I am far more interested in the friendship (I’m not going to call it romance) between Yi-na and Han Joon Woo (played by super talented Moon Woo Jin).

Episode 6 (Sunday) is the mid-point of this drama. Romance k-dramas usually hand viewers the first “kiss” at the half way mark, but first kiss already happened so hopefully we get at least one major unexpected major plot twist

They should Atleast make kang ha a dark character (darkest among all the others even the rich bullies) then it…
Mystery boy and the catalyst for whatever comes?? Perfect role for Lee Chae Min. I usually hate teen school draas but I'll at least give it a try for LCM - a great and very versatile actor for someone that young.

If this is how it all plays out - and it appears likely - then this drama will down in kdrama history as the drama…
I don't mind predictable romance formulas and I don't mind a sprinkling of kdrama tropes. But I really like kdramas that "twist" the tropes and provide something fresh. The Atypical Family certainly began that way. I especially enjoy the contrast between the two families - for instance, the scammers eat together, the "elite" do not.

I like most of the characters - except Gwi Ju. Perhaps that is why I don't care about the romance - especially if it simply follows a predictable arc.

Title Frankly Speaking Spoiler
Who is the father of On Woo Joo's kid? I am assuming that boy is her kid right?
I haven't watched this week yet, but is it confirmed? JTBC and the Wiki site and says something different. But, of course, that's based on whatever we were told before the drama began.

This is so obvious. He is going to save her from fire. That's how he overcome his depression I guess. FL not remembering…
If this is how it all plays out - and it appears likely - then this drama will down in kdrama history as the drama that started with a unique story and characters and quickly morphed into predictable territory.

However, FL remembers the trauma (related to fire). It's not clear if the viewer yet knows how/when the fire occurred.

Episode 5 pre-release https://twitter.com/into_jky/status/1791272385771171964
I just watched on the JTBC web site and WTF - JTBC doesn't even provide subs in Korean??? It's obvious what is happening but since I don't feel the chemistry this does not make me eager to watch (unlike QoT wherein its pre-releases ran the gamut with a variety of characters and stories. TvN knows how to do pre-releases. 😊)

Not that I can translate Korean very well, and I'm not the type to try and shame people for whatever insensitivity they may display, but for crying out loud, do you want to promote this or not, JTBC???? Some viewers - even if not hard of hearing - LIKE subtitles.

Title Knock Off
It will make it an easy Not Watch if Jo Bo Ah ends up starring in it. She is the only Korean actress I cannot…
I don't hate her but she will never be a reason for me to check out a drama.

On the other hand, Kim Soo Hyun (who I know nothing about except QoT) and Go Gyu Pil are big reasons for me to at least check it out.

Who is the 6th person behind the curtains in new drama poster?
Maybe someone who lives in that cave that Da Hae noticed when she first visited the estate. 😂😂😎

I think she sees the ring and assumes they give it to Da Hae rather than her getting it through more nefarious…
Thanks @Ivy - you are watching closely so I'm glad to know I didn't miss anything.

I don't like the school fire connection simply because it's way too obvious. A roller-coaster ride with lots of climbs/plummets and whiplash turns is more fun than one gradual, lazy climb up a mountain slope to watch the sunset.

I just finished ep 3, but my theory is that he can touch her because she's one of the girls the captain saved…
Clearly, the writer is hitting us over the head with the idea that he saved her in the past. I hope the answer is something totally different - perhaps she has her own super-powers that have been latent/suppressed because of whatever incident occurred in the past.
