I have mixed feelings about Rurouni Kenshin after finding out the creator was charged with possession of child…
Ohh, that's a really tough subject - the question of how to feel about the Art when the creator is a piece of sh*t (which I didn't know until this moment). In this case, I feel like it's hard to bash Kenshin because the art itself doesn't reflect any of that and is so removed from it? Plus, the movie is so different from the source material that it's almost it's own (beautiful) thing xD

Yes, that is a very Japanese way of transitioning time! In American films, or even Koreans, you'd often see" x years later" written on the screen to indicate time has past instead. I find the Japanese way more subtle and artistic, but I can definitely see why that would be a difficult technique for someone not familiar with the seasons! Where are you from (and what seasons DO you have?)
Lovely article! wonderfully written and explained with pictures! This is a great snapshot of how light and tones…
Omg, SAME! I am a former film student, and my favorite thing by far was how good directors manage to visually manipulate their audience's feeling by the way the color, light and shot a scene. And it's usually something that happens subconsciously for the viewer which is incredible. Shot analysis was my favorite classes haha

I didn't notice any such time skips with this movie, it's set in a pretty condensed time frame, but I think there are some pretty standard cues: snow for winter, a shot of a clear sky for summer, blooming trees for spring and falling leaves for fall. You can look at those plus the clothing to help determine such things, although I admit I haven't encountered such time skips in the movies/drama I have seen so far - I know them mostly from Anime hehe
Non usual topic but very informative....I am the type who don't usually notice on these things as long as I could…
In a good movie, you're technically not supposed to notice these things consciously, but subconsciously. They are meant to enhance the experience and support the writing/plot so that the emotions that are supposed to be felt are felt, etc, so it's totally normal not to notice these things!
You totally should try out Kenshin haha. The movie is great (haven't watched the sequels yet) with good plot, writing, and acting. And, of course, visually stunning as well. It's just around two and a half hours of your time so it shouldn't disrupt your drama viewing too much, either :D
Thanks for the article! Such an interesting read. I took up an art appreciation course last year and it opened…
Thank you for reading it! Oh, Life on Mars uses that tool? that's pretty awesome! I love it when Dramas go that extra mile beyond just being pretty to look at ^_^ And it's never a hardship to re-watch Rurouni Kenshin, it's so good xD

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! ^_^ Yes, the art behind making a movie is often a silent art that most people understand "unconsciously" but don't notice. Like, you FEEL what the movie maker intended, but you don't necessarily know why you're feeling it, you know?

If you do ever watch it, let me know how it went!
What do you mean "similar" to this feel? You mean plot-wise or technique wise? lol
