I think that Eul Tae killed Hwal's mother too. I don't think she wanted to die. There's something about him being born even though she died... I'm really curious about that.
also, I agree. she might've been protecting Hwal when she took his soul. and giving him the chance to be bulgasal so that he can finally end Eun Tae off... Because Eun Tae seems to be scared of Hwal in some way even if he hides it.
