I disagree. I don’t think he objectifies him. I think he lacks the emotional maturity to meet Kiyoi face-on as an adult so he hides behind a fan and sunglasses. He is a tragic character who has no self-worth, deserving of pity.

This is how Hira conveys “safe” love for Kiyoi - it may seem frustrating but it’s fascinating. He doesn’t have the maturity or self worth to meet him as an equal so he hides in the shadow behind glasses and a fan. He is a tragic character worthy of empathy.

Hira is a frustrating character which is why so many people dislike the series. He has no self love. He can’t accept Kiyoi’s love and attraction even though it’s staring at him right in the face. It’s heartbreaking when he doesn’t recognize how he’s insulted Kiyoi by not wanting him to meet his parents. Ironically Hira can’t truly love Kiyoi until he loves himself first. Self love can’t be imbued.
