The story is based on real people.
I read that the movie adaptation was very popular. I skimmed through it, and it’s a bit of a different vibe from the series. In the movie, seems like there is more fighting whereas in the series, it’s more focused on daeng’s life and him as a person which I really like. He’s always honest and never justifies what he does. I love his relationship with his mom, his friends and his girlfriend.
I think back then there wasn’t many ways out of poverty. If you were born poor, you only had so many choices in order to live and get by each day. In this story, daeng had two choices: join a gang or become a corrupt cop. even the latter wasn’t afforded him.
I like that none of the main characters, including his friends and girlfriend, never were shocked by his mom being a prostitute. They were always respectful towards her and treated her like a mom.
Of course, I loved daeng. the other characters also made this story very colorful: definitely top one – his mom, then his friends and girlfriend. The irony of his best friend spending most of the story being jealous of daeng and trying to become a bigger fish in a dirty tank only to realize that all of it was futile.
True to its novel name, the path of a mafia. Doesn’t matter whether you’re a good or bad person, everyone who walks the path face the same end one way or another.
He told his mom he wished he would’ve left with her sooner, but I think that wouldn’t have made a difference.
I thought the ending was very poetic.
