I read the comments before watching, and I thought, was it that bad? Once I've finished it, well, it's not that bad. I really enjoy it, although like TLT2 there are some parts that felt too draggy and the cut between scenes felt quite rough and abrupt. And some of the stories don't quite fit with the next adaptation (Ultimate Note). But the entire show isn't as bad as some have described. The first 8 episodes also fill in the gap left in TLT2. At least, we can understand how Wu Xie decides and ends up in Mt. Changbai.
I quite understand why some said Wu Xie was out of character, this Wu Xie is indeed different than the other Wu Xie. It's not a bad thing, especially because as the story progress, Wu Xie's character will undergo development. Keep in mind that at the start of the story, he was betrayed by his uncle, whom he trusted. Of course, he's going to be angry and mistrusting the people around him. His very uncle, his own family can betray him, why can't others betray him too? Along the journey, he also slowly finds out that the things he believes all his life might not be true. Even the person he also trusts (Pangzi) works with Qiu De Kao, even though for a very understandable reason too. Those will definitely shake him up, so I can't fully blame him for being angry and wary of everything.
And Xiaoge is not too out of character too. Sure he talks more, but it's always when he's around Wu Xie and not to others. I think the other portrayal of Xiaoge is more or less the same? He talks more and shows more expression when it comes to Wu Xie. With others, he's still quiet and has a poker face. Still, I agree that there are some parts that make him a bit different than the other portrayal of Xiaoge. However, those parts don't completely ruin the character.
All in all, while there are some drawbacks and differences in the portrayal of the characters, the whole series is not a failure if compared to the other adaptations. It's good and quite enjoyable.
