I think everything that can be said about Pursuit of Jade has been said. I watched it when it was first released on the back of Tian Xiewei’s performance in New Life Begins and the promotion on iQIYI. I pressed the reserve button but to this day I’m not sure what this does? I didn't recognise the ML, Zhang Ling He, as being the same actor as the role he portrayed in the Princess Royal. The directorship, cinematography and acting of the build up of the relationship between Fan Chang Yu and Xie Zheng is one of the best I’ve seen in any drama not just C-drama. If there is any complaint it only relates to how restricted the makeup artists must feel in portraying injuries on battle fields and fights. This is a generalised comment common to Chinese and Korean drama. I believe it is due to censorship. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.
This is a great comedy crime caper with a fantastic ensemble of character actors. I came to it via my iQIYI subscription and following Tian Xiewei from her other series of New Life Begins and POJ. She’s a great comedic actress but plays it dead straight here. The comedy is mainly situational but there are so many laugh out loud moments and great performances. It’s a shame it hasn’t been picked up by Netflix or Amazon. I think the slapstick element would appeal to a world wide audience. As a Brit, it certainly appealed to my sense of humour.
From what I’ve read, this will be a drama not a rom com with drama. . She is a trained actress and it shows in the range of the roles she’s chosen to take on. I wish her well as she moves towards heavier roles. The acting ability of the ML and cast are more important than their looks.
Enjoying this series so far. Lots of laugh out loud moments as well as ones that address adolescence and being different. I’m aware that the series is being watched at different times and depends on free or VIP status re what other see when. So use of spoilers appreciated. I am interested in the ratings though. Why can people rate unreleased episodes? Especially as the two who rate the unseen episodes give it an average of 5.5! Does my drama have control of the scoring system for on air productions. ?
Reading the comments and living in a country with a constitutional monarch - I wonder whether the writer is influenced more by the European or Asian version of this type of monarchy. European monarchies have relaxed a lot of traditions in the last 20 yrs. regarding choice of partner, gender re first born etc. The Japanese court remains fairly formal from what I understand. I know it is fantasy for S. Korea but N.Korea already has an absolute power monarchical system with the Kim family.
Started watching this today. As a Brit I am used to constitutional monarchy and a class system. So I can go with the flow. What I’m struggling with is the poor subtitling on Disney+. Maybe I’ve just gotten used to Viki. Too many lapses and then an unreadable flash of text. Disappointing. Come on Disney. Viki and iQlYl are far superior.
FL was in an accident and woke up with a concussion so she probably didn’t have time to change her clothes.…
Thank you. That makes sense re the censorship. The FL played a great part. I hope in most work places you wouldn’t be expected to go back to work after you’ve been knocked out - but I can see it adds to their meeting on the stairs. . She looked very vulnerable.
I really enjoyed watching this. A good fun romp. Great chemistry between the two leads. Loved the otter and snake too. My only quibble was the last episode. The costumes in the fantasy world were fantastic but the FL’s looked like she’d be drawn through a hedge backward for a business meeting in the modern world. Did wardrobe run out of money. Also, I understand the Chinese censorship re time travel when in depicts real history but why in fantasy land? Perhaps someone can explain.
The biggest issue in SK at the moment in the trial and possible impeachment of their president. There is civil unrest. Celebrity scandals in any country knock the real issues off the front pages. These are dark times indeed!
I am so pleased there is a film version of this book. It’s a great read and so positive to see a main lead as a woman in her 60s. I know the musical PAGWA was staged in Seoul last year. Kim Jae Wook was one of the actors who played Bullfighter, the main antagonist. I hope it gets picked up and subbed in English.
Love this series. Only a couple of things irk me apart for ageism. The pink back pack is a constant giveaway and why, if Im Sun looks like her aunt wasn’t Mi Jin’s mother happy as she has been hoping for Im Sun’s return. The woman Im Sun worked with in the bank recognised her?
