Dang…To each their own, but I disagree. The Story of MingLan is definitely one of the best C-dramas and one of my favorites. Not comparing them, I think Coroners Diary is pretty good.

I’m personally a fan of stories that don’t focus solely on one genre/aspect and felt like it was a good mix of the crime solving and romance.

In terms of their romance, rather than a lack of chemistry, I saw it as great depiction of two inexperienced reserved people that fell in love. I love the way Ao Rui Peng showed Yan Chis emotions through glances and facial expressions, since he lived in the military with only men since he was 8 and even stated himself that he wasn’t the best with words. Shen Wan was guarded for obvious reasons, but after they got together she acknowledged the way he cared about her and that she would learn to show it as well. Simply looking at personalities, Yan Chi and Shen Wan were both more introverted compared to the playfulness and boldness of Gu TingYe and MingLan.

Yan Chi realized early on that Shen Wan could be helpful to solving the case of Prince Jin, so it made sense for him to gain her trust and work with her. Grand princess took an instant liking to her because she took the risk of saving her, noticing she was a simple and smart person. That of course only grew more when she not only saved her again, but also helped her family avoid disaster. Grand princess and Yue Ning had similar personalities of being confident, unrestrained, and playful, so her grandmother of course teased her. Aside from them and Yan Chi, most other characters didn’t actually care for Shen Wan, but rather how they could benefit from her. Supporting her was more of a way to help themselves. Of the main characters, Shen Wan and Yan Chi had their own goals, while Yue Ning and Yan Li just wanted to enjoy life. All the supporting characters/factions had their own selfish ambitions for power.

Definitely give it a try! It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I found it interesting and the romance is sweet and fluffy.

I would say most historical C-dramas have some sort of palace intrigue (political). The amount generally depends on how close the characters are to the palace (ie. family, relationships, titles/positions), of course POJ is a good example of this.

Wuxias and Xianxias (historical with fantasy elements) are their own separate categories.

It’s normally used by everyone. That’s why whenever most people bring her up, they say Xue Fang Fei instead of Xue Li. Those close to her (dad, Xiao Heng, friends) normally call her A’Li or some use Li’er.

I’ve rewatched it so many times, which might be the reason I see it differently.

Also, despite it being my favorite show, no show is perfect and I feel like there are always certain details I find questionable as well. So I get it!

As the other commenter mentioned, he definitely used it to taunt her (like a ‘I know who you really are’), but there are also a couple of things to know about their names from then. There are birth names, given names, and titles. Xue Fang Fei is a given name (given normally when a person becomes an “adult”) so most people use that or the persons title if they have one (Xiao Heng is generally referred by his dukedom, Duke Su). Her birth name is Xue Li, so people close to her (mainly family and some friends) or more senior could call her that or the more affectionate way would be A’Li. Jiang Li is a birth name (she never got a given name) so she could also be referred to as A’Li. So by Xiao Heng calling her A’Li, it makes it seem like they’re closer, but not suspicious to outsiders.

I agree, but the last part is ironic considering that he still cared more about the throne and having power than being in their lives.

Also, Yan Lis face when he found out and asked “what about my mom and I?” 😭

Also, first thing that came to mind were the scene in which he saved her from the water (ep 15) and that last argument he had with his dad.

Literally thinking the same thing. Ao Rui Peng did a great job and I have a new appreciation for his acting.

Also, a big thing to keep in mind is the effect the poison has on Song Mo. It causes uncontrollable anger and in the original timeline it practically consumed him. This time around, having Dou Zhao has helped calm him and prevented him from lashing out.

That specific issue stemmed from Song Han wanting his dad’s tablet being placed in the ancestral hall, which the twins and Mr. Chen were against it because of how improper it would be, especially now that Song Mo and Dou Zhao became the heads of the family.

In terms of Dou Zhao, she definitely is cautious around Song Han. She even told An Su beforehand to rethink her marriage. Despite knowing about the original timeline, she doesn’t know all of the details and there are definitely things that have changed.

You should definitely look into his music! He has sung on the OST for a BUNCH of dramas. Depending on how many c-dramas you’ve watched, you’ve probably heard quite a few songs he sang without even realizing it.
