If you're reading this and considering watching the show, I would highly recommend you skip it and instead go and watch another recent kdrama called "Oh my Venus!". Both are similar in terms of story - one is about a woman who is ugly and the other one who is fat.
The writing and quality of the two dramas are as different as day and night though, and in my review here I'll explain why.
In "She was Pretty" the main character is constantly bullied throughout the show and the one who says the most awful things to her is the guy that is supposed to be the love interest. He calls her retarded, dyslectic, asks if she has some kind of disorder and absolutely makes sure she knows how incredible much he hates her. This all changes the second she gets her make-over and becomes pretty though. From that moment on he is suddenly madly in love with her and it was so cringe-worthy to watch him suddenly be nice and kind to her just because she looks good when he previously treated her so badly.
Did he somehow forget that he hates her personality and everything about her)?? It made my impression of the character go from bad to worse and it made it obvious how badly written the show was.
In "Oh my Venus!" on the other hand, the girl is never looked down upon for her weight and the other characters find her charming and cute despite being fat. They accept who she is as a person and they try to help her the best way they can.
Unlike "She was Pretty" where the reason behind the character's sadness was because she didn't live up to a man's expectation, "Oh my Venus!" focus 100% on the girl. She's not doing it because she wants a guy to think she's pretty. She's not doing it out of obligation or guilt, she does it because she wants to.
At the end of the day
"Oh my Venus!" focus on being healthy, the message they're telling is that if you take care of your body people will find you sexy no matter what you look like. It's an encouraging show that makes you feel good about yourself.
"She was Pretty!" focus on outer beauty, the message they're telling is that if you're ugly people will hate you and if you're pretty they will love you.
I don't know about you but for me it's pretty clear which show I'd rather watch.
